Official Race Results

Team Tybee Island is First to the Beach
But only minutes behind them came the long shot Team Morada sailing the only Nacra 6.0 in the fleet. An outstanding job done by Dennis Green and Curt Johnson.

Third across the line was the Marstrom 20 of Coconut Grove Sailing, followed by Team Windy Hill, still another "dark horse" that did well by finishing in the top 1/3 of the fleet.

Mike Hill of Team St. Louis, said, "If you stayed out (from the shore) the wind was too much on the beam and you couldn't carry the spinnaker, but in close to shore the wind was from behind and you could."

Most of the fleet finished without chutes, but the youth team of Charlie Trinque and Harry Newkirk of Key Sailing let the way. Close behind them, Carl Roberts and Jake Kohl of Sailmax Two followed suit.

Surprisingly, Australia's star sailor, Rod Waterhouse, finished in 7th place -- over 40 minutes behind the leader. This will make things pretty rough on Team Pirates.

Race Officials were unable to get the results posted last night. So, we at Catsailor.com and www.onlinemarinestore.com gathered the info and here are the Unofficial Results after the first leg. Click Here for Results!

Mike Ferrara and Frank Moore pilot Team Windy Hill to an excellent finish in 4th place.

Mike Hill and John McDonald of Team St. Louis edge out Rod Waterhouse and Rob Remmers of Team Pirates for a respectable 6th place finish

et
And the finish was close indeed between St Louis (l) and the Pirates (r)

Winning the award for the flashiest finish is Key Sailing, piloted by youth sailors, Charlie Trinque and Harry Newkirk

The start tomorrow is 10AM and we are all praying for more wind.

They are Off on the First Journey

With a noon start and several hundred spectators, the fleet got off with a literal splash. No, the seas were not overwhelming.., in fact they were rather mild by comparison to many years past.

The eleven boats were set off in two rows, drawn by playing cards at the skippers meeting. Tomorrow's line up will be determined by order of finish for the day, with the first to finish teams lining up in the most northerly end of the line.

Winds remained in the 7-8 mph range and the fleet headed for Fowey Rock on a close reach. If all goes well, they may be able to fly spinnakers on the way back to Hollywood.

The seas were certainly kind for the start of the first leg.

Veteran Worrell 1000 competitor, Carl Roberts and crew, Jake Kohl got off to a nice start for team Sailmax.biz 2

Charlie Trinque and Harry Newkirk of Team Keysailing got it into gear faster than anyone around them and moved out quickly

Mike Hill and John McDonald of Team St. Louis got off with no problems as well

Team Morada was a little slow off the beach and got rolled

Skippers Meeting at 10 AM, Start at Noon

Winds are forecasted to be out of the east at around 5-10 mph for the first leg, which starts on Hollywood Beach and heads south to Fowey Rock (a lighthouse about 7 miles south of Miami Harbor Entrance) and return to Hollywood Beach.

Stay Tuned for the Finish at Hollywood and be sure to check the Beach Hot Line

A Skipper's Meeting was Held at 10AM

Today the sailors had their first skipper's meeting with introductions of the race officials. That was followed by weigh-ins. It was brief and fast, letting the sailors get back to rigging their boats in preparation for tomorrow's exciting start.

We will be setting up a Hot Line on our Forum in addition to this page where you will be getting minute-by-minute reports on any happenings. Mary Wellsand Barb Short will be making regular posts on that page as they get cell-phone messages from our reporters from different locations. So be sure to stay tuned to both this page and the Hot Line Page.

Stay tuned to this Site for full coverage of the race from Islamorada (in the Florida Keys) to Tybee Island in Georgia (near Savanah)
