They Finally Arrived

Team Velocity took the lead and dominated the upwind battle. Yet, Tybee Island was right behind. All the boats were very close together -- there was no domination.

As of this posting, here is the order of finishes:

  1. Velocity
  2. Tybee
  3. Marley Yellow
  4. Cat Fever
  5. Marley Orange
  6. Seacats
  7. Marley White

Fleet Averaging 8-10 mph in VMG.., Going to be Late

It is going to be a late Night. After just checking the tracking devices it would seem the boats that might be toward the front of the pack are around Sebastian, about 40 miles away.

The educated guess for time of arrival is 9PM or later. So, Sports Fan, don't excpect any pictures of their arrival at the beach. Hmm! You probably shouldn't excpect any interviews either.., I can picture most saying, "Get out of my way!"

Thoughts on the tracking

The tracking idea has really been a great idea for this year's race. It seems the rental for the broadcasting units are only about $30 and the viewing in not expensive either. I suspect by next year prices might even be more competitive, tech stuff to be better, and the viewing easier and more understandable.

Perhaps the Great Texas ought to be checking this out for their race coming up next month. This idea should set a precedence for other diatance races.

And They are OFF to Cocoa Beach on the Third Leg of the Tybee 500

As of the start the wind had switched to the North and increased to at least 15 mph or more. The surf was not very bad, but there was a second surf section about 100 yards off shore where the waves were breaking bigger than on the beach.

Last year this is where all the devastation occurred after the boats got past the beach series of waves. Now looking at the second set of breakers it explained better how the boats last year had so many problems.

This time there were no problems for the fleet -- they all navigated both surf lines very well. The F18 was the only one that had to come back in. Apparently the carpeting in his daggerboard well was hindering their abillity to get the board down. The returned to the beach and tore out the carpeting and got back into the race.

(By the way, a correction from yesterday) The second boat to use the spinnaker off the start line was not Marleys White, rather Moose-Burd on the F18.

All of the teams did a great job of navigating through the first set of waves

You can see the size of the outer surf in the picure above and below

Team Moose-Burd had trouble with the daggerboard so sailed back to the beach to repair. Here they are going back out through the surf

The Weather Forecast for the Third Leg

Sunny. Areas of smoke downwind from existing fires. Becoming breezy. Highs in the mid 80s...except in the lower 80s along the coast. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph early becoming northeast 15 to 20 mph.

This could be a long day for fleet -- it will be close-hauled all the way with long port tacks and short starboard tacks all the way to Cocoa Beach.

The actual wind right now is about 8 mph from the WNW.

We now have 5 teams that have tracking devices. However they are on three different screens. THe reason is that all of Marleys teams are under one account, and Team Tybee is under another account, and Team Cat Fever is under still another account. Hopefully, for next year all the teams can be under one account and we can watch them all at once.

As a bit of a clean up on the action from yesterday, Team Velocity amazingly finished pretty close behind most of the fleet. Next to last, sure, but still pretty close.

But they had their problems along the way. Trey Brown, the skipper, fell off the boat and probably at that time broke the tiller in half. This left Alan Steward aboard the boat alone, with goofed up steering, and trying to find a way to get back to Brown.

He managed to do so. They jury-rigged the tiller and made it to the finish in still very good time.
