Walk me through this

Walk me through this - 09/02/14 03:56 PM

Needing to pull the daggarboard out for gelcoat fairing.

Questions:
- Looks like some sort of adhesive between base plate and deck. Any thoughts on non-destructive removal?

- recommended sealant between plate and deck when I reinstall?

- when I replace the screws, should I consider bedding in thickened epoxy (assuming they're just screwed into the sandwich material)? If so, will I be able to remove them in the future? Should I wax the screws?

Pray to your favorite god that it isn't 3M 5200.

But it looks like regular polysulphide caulk (Boatlife).

Remove the screws and try levering it off. Maybe run a box cutter around the edge to help break the seal.

No way screws would be set in a sandwich material. See what they look like when they come out.

I would remove the screw and heat the plate gently with a propane torch until it comes off.

well...first, remove the screws and see if you can gently pry it up. You might be surprised. If not, use a 5200 remover and soak the area (it will degrade any 5200 that it comes in contact with - so keep this in mind). Let that soak a while and remove the parts. The blade under the edge might give it some incentive and might help work the remover into the joint a little if it is problematic.

Reseal it with Sikaflex UV.

OK, Daggerboard trunk, that a mast base sits on,

apologies. Corsair F24-2

Yeah, it's not a cat, but you twerps have a pretty good experience base in composites, foils and lightweight multihulls...
