Go to the HCA's new website (hca-na.org), click on the "Rankings" button and then on your class to see how you stack up against the rest of North America!

I’ve found it’s easier to right click the link and use the "save as" option.
This is very cool. Over 1000 sailors ranked in five classes.
A while ago there was a discussion about how many people are sailing what and where. This answers a big part of that question.
Congratulations to all the top ranked teams.
And thanks to Matt and Fluffy for making this work.

Matt

Looks like a good idea, but it does not seem accurate. Nigel Pitt, Mike Krantz don't own Tiger's and were sailing NACRA's.
You have Jack Wise ahead of Dennis Hawks and Nigel. In our division for the year Dennis won, but your rankings don't show that.

Just my thoughts

Thanks for the feedback, Dave. The data we got was a little sketchy sometimes. We'll post a corrected copy ASAP.

Because of the way the HCA system works, it may rank people differently than divisional points systems. We looked at a bunch of different systems before we settled on this one. We had a hard time balancing the disparity in fleet sizes in different sections of the country. Like most compromises, it's sure to please nobody

Revised Tiger Rankings have been sent to the web master for posting. Found out that we grabbed the wrong MidWinter's West results, too.

Made a big difference at the top.

Matt,

That's really neat! Looks like the only Div 9 regatta that was counted was Gone With the Wind and that they jumbled all the F18s together regardless of manufacturer. I love the concept though.

Nice job, Matt. It's fun to see how we stack up. But like most rankings, prolific sailors are rewarded with a higher ranking without really performing at a higher standard. Wayne Moneyham and Wick Smith are examples of great sailors who didn't sail the 20 much last season and ended up low on the list. Is there a formula that takes into account your result in each race, the number of competitors and weighs better results in big regattas more heavily?

Steve,

Here's a great explanation of the points system which addresses your point.

Matt

It is looking better, looks like a lot of work. Why don't you have all the regattas for division 9. It seems to me that the results of the rankings would not be balanced unless you scored each sailors best five regattas. I know it is hard to get the results from the different regattas though.

Re: Hobie Class 2004 Competitor Rankings Now Poste - 01/11/05 05:52 AM

The real hard work was doing all the various permutations on various systems. We did it for the 16's first, since we had the most data and the broadest coverage (that's why some regattas don't have any results in other classes).

But then, what seemed to work for the 16's didn't for the 17's (the next class we did). Seems that large fleets in one area of the country skewed the results too much. Back to the drawing board. Finally, after about a year of fooling around with it, we settled on the formula, Fluffy entered the data (it even gives points for RC duty) and we put it up.

Getting the data was a hassle. Usually, we had to grab it off web sites. The quality was pretty bad, too. No first names. No last names! No automated entry here - Fluffy put it in all by hand. We're putting up a recommended reporting format for 2005 that'll (hopefully) make it easier.

The spreadsheets on the HCA web site have all the formulas and data entry sheets removed so that they'll download in a reasonable amount of time. The full, working Hobie 16 spreadsheet is over 10Mb!

Now it's time to go set up the 2005 sheet. This crap never ends.

Aaaah, thanks Jake. That answers my question nicely. After reading that, it's clear that Matt and the gang did a really nice job putting this together.

This is 100% my fault David.
In previous years, I have always grabbed the results from the organizers at the end of the regatta, but this year it was done differently.
When I got the results, in one lump, they were scanned pictures of the written results.
Like, 20 separate JPG's of scanned, hand-written, results for each class.
I actually have a spreadsheet started, but with the holidays and all, I just feel behind on it.

Sorry.

The Tiger rankings are now up-to-date on the website.

I think somebody screwed up...I'm still 3rd from last in the country and that can't be right!

Matt,

There are a few sailors listed at the bottom with no race data...I didn't sail a Tiger in a regatta last year and probably shouldn't be on the list. If I were higher up I might have not said anything but I'm sitting down there at the bottom!

Re: third from last - 01/13/05 02:36 AM

I don't know, Jake. You sail an awful lot of regattas! Maybe you've got an alter ego that sails Tigers but just needs some practice?

Re: Hobie Class 2004 Competitor Rankings Now Poste - 01/19/05 02:38 PM

With the addition of some more data from Division 14 (and the corrections of some discrepancies that people noticed), the results have been updated through 1/18/05

/sorry, Jake - you've been expunged.

Tracie - if you can get Division 9's results to Fluffy before the end of the month, we'll include them, too.

THAT one I deserve! I raced a Hobie17 once last year - I enjoyed it and did pretty well too!

Re: Hobie Class 2004 Competitor Rankings Now Posted! - 01/20/05 12:37 AM

Fluffy and Matt,
congratulations, this is an excellent job! I know how time consuming it is to get all the results together, and once you think you are done and have published it, the sailors come back to you and request changes.
Keep up the excellent work!

Ooo wait. I raced the H17 twice last year. Didn't do so well in the first time out at the one that was recorded. Did better at a non-Hobie regatta after that one. I still feel slighted that I never got to race the boat while trapezed. I bet that's a hoot off a wing!
