Mast Rake

Hi All,

I've just done up a new mast and changed a few things in the process. What's a good starting place for mast rake for sailing Mark 1?.... an observation... the new section with everything on it is considerably lighter than the old with everything off it?

i think the standard is top of mast 6 inches back from front beam, if your having trouble tacking ( getting in to irons) stand it up a bit more. if your not, and your lacking up hill speed, lean it back a bit

Hi Simon,

yes current Victorian section was some 1.5kg lighter than the mast I got with 1760. More flexible though, so you may need to tighten diamonds and rotate more when trying to power up.

My idea on rake is keep raking mast back until weather helm causes you to pull on tiller when trying to power up in moderate winds and then stand it back up one hole. I think ideal is that when you feel a bit of weather helm and rudders drag when trying to pull away with wrinkles up luff of mainsail, you should be able to pull on down haul and weather helm will dissapear.

Yes I noticed that the new section is rather more flexible than the old. More learning to do
