Hobie 16 w/ trentec jib traveler cars - 09/07/08 10:02 PM

I just bought a 1977 Hobie 16, my first sailboat. I am almost ready to go just need to run my Jib sheet, It has the 2 jib traveler cars. I only have 3 swivel cam cleats on the front crossbar. It that correct or am I missing another one for the other traveller return line? I am a little confused by the schematics and info I have found on the matter.

I'm no pro but that looks like the way mine is set up. I also have a shock cord that runs from the inside hole, under the dolphin striker, to the opposite side inside hole of the traveler car to act as a return for the traveler cars. The shock cord pull the traveler cars back to the center of the boat when the traveler car control line is released.
Good luck!

Thanks Hobie1616 I had read some of your posts before.
Heres my question: Are both jib traveler cars supposed to move at the same time? Or am I supposed to be able to control/ move one at a time? Right now I have a single traveller return line which brings both sides back to center at the same time.

They should be set up with a seperate control line and cleat for each to pull them outboard. A bungee from each to the opposite corner castings returns them to center when the control line is released.

thanks a lot. I'm replacing my jib sheet on this Hobie I picked up a month ago and it doesn't have that cleat on the port side. The previous owner used it 6 times 10 years ago. Right now it has the swivel cam cleats for the jib sheet and starboard traveller return line. Suggest using the same thing for the port side return line?

Separately. Check out the drawing to see how the lines to control the car outhaul are set up. Also put a piece of bungee between the two cars so they'll be pulled back to center when released.

There are a couple of diagrams on return systems in the parts catalog... page 24

Both catalog drawings have the outhaul line crossing the tramp to the rear corner casting. Both the crew and skipper will get hung up in them. My drawing has the outhaul line in front of the mast base, through a lance cleat and tied off on the shroud. Much less crap on the tramp.

You'll also save a slug of money by using lance cleats. The Harken 150s are major overkill for the application.

The catalog drawings are not complete with the tie off point. We also tie to ther shroud.

The angle of the line indicates they terminate on the corner castings. If they were move forward to the shrouds they would still have more exposure to hanging up the crew then the lines in my design.
