Both Ben and Myself went out for sail on our newer mossies today. Ben on Top Gun and Myself on Jive (used to be Smik).
Perfect weather for a testing day a little bit of wind and a little chop.
Ben had Top gun cranking from the word go (even if he's battens went tied in properly). Once he tighten the battens on properly he went out again. The second time he went out it was blowing a bit more and he had Top Gun exceptionally well for his first time out.
On the other hand Myself and jive(used to be smik) took it alot more calmly as I was hesitant on pushing her incase I put a foot through the hull. The times I did push her she went surprisingly well. Down wind she had alot of pace and upwind was alot of hard work.
I compared jive to Top Gun and we were both pointing the same but with Ben's uk sail there was no catching him. I think Im going to have to change my sail to get the speed out of her.
Now that I have sailed her I know that I have to set her up and tune her to get her going to her full potential.
Very enjoyable day was had by myself, Ben and Bandit on a 16sq.

We are hoping to get back out for another sail before the brass monkey and Im hoping to organise another 1 or 2 mossies to come out with us.

Cheers
William

Will,

Great to hear that you are out doing some benchmarking off each other.

Sounds like your sail was too full upwind if it was allot of work. Out of interest what were your outhaul, downhaul and mast rotation settings.

Regards,

Peter

They were all C__p. Tried every setting on the boat. The rotation is one thing I will definately be changing. The boat had really good down wind speed.
The down haul I started at about 8 and didnt really move from there maybe +/-1. The out haul I tried every setting.
I dont think I had the main that full as it didnt really lift the hull out of the water that much mainly skimming, but trying to maintain it was the hard part. 1635 would maintain the hull skimming. But the way the boat is set up at the moment nothing is at arms reach. You have to get off trap to get to everything.
Plus having the boat this light everything was happening double speed. Maybe its just the fact that I havent sailed since the vic states.

Will,

Was the downhaul setting of 8 what you were using downwind as well ?
Also what is your downhaul ratio; 6:1 or 8:1 ?

Regards,

Peter

pretty much didnt change the down hall setting after that. Tried to make it a little flatter going up wind.
The boat has a 8:1 setup with the main sheet coming through the last block on the centre beam up front.
Im hoping to be going back out in the next 1 or 2 weeks to do a little more testing and tuning. hopefully we can start getting some pace out of her.
The boat 1803 that I finished felt similar to 1691 but 1691 fells alot more twitchier.

Will,

If it's great downwind then twitchy upwind and you haven't changed the downhaul setting much it sounds like you are overpowered upwind.

Try cranking the downhaul on a bit more, put the outhaul on fully then let it off a bit and play the mast rotation.

Like you already said nothing is accessible from out on trapeze so with a few mods you should be able to reach some controls with relative ease next time out.

Regards,

Peter

Hi Will,

if I am right Top Gun has been racing in Titles more recently than your new Mossie, never under estimate the advances made in sails and rig set ups in recent years by the Mossies, as you have been known to say, despite the rumours Mossies are not dead and development has seen them progress well in the southern states .

Have a good look at the way Top Gun is set up and work towards that, perhaps one thing that is most difficult to set up is centreboard positions this is worth checking as it will effect the amount of rake in the mast you can use. If twitchyness is a problem also check rudder alignment and rake of rudders.

You mentioned in earlier post the Brass Monkey regatta, do you mean the one from the Flying Squadron? and when is it on?
