RULES
The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The 2005 - 2008 Racing Rules of Sailing.

ADVERTISING Advertising will be restricted to Category C.
ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY
Austin Yacht Club ("AYC") members and guests are cordially invited to participate in AYC's 2008 Turnback Canyon Regatta. AYC is both the Host and the Organizing Authority of the regatta. The regatta is open to all monohull keelboats, centerboard boats, and multihull boats (including "beach cats").
Registration can be done online prior to 5/14/08 at 5:00 PM. Late registration can be done from 5/14/08 at 5:00 PM until 5/23/08 at 12:00 PM online with a $20.00 additional fee. On-site registration can be done Friday, May 23, 2008 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM and Saturday morning from 08:00 until 09:00. All competitors who have registered online must check in Saturday morning to pick up regatta package and sign liability waiver.

NOTICES TO COMPETITORS Notices to Participants will be posted on one or both of two Official Notice Boards, one located on the bulletin board on the lower level of the AYC Clubhouse, and the other in the window facing the lake in the Bar-K Park Clubhouse.
CHANGES IN SAILING INSTRUCTIONS Any change in these Sailing Instructions shall be posted no later than fifteen minutes after the close of the participant's meeting on Saturday, May 26 or by 0830 on Sunday, May 27 if the change(s) affects that day's racing, except that any change to the schedule of races will be posted by 2000 on the day before it will take effect. Changes will be posted on one or both of the Official Notice Boards as appropriate.
SIGNALS MADE ASHORE Signals made ashore will be displayed from either the AYC flagpole or the Lago Vista Homeowner's Park (LVHP) temporary signal mast, as appropriate.
When code flag "AP" is displayed ashore, "1 minute" is replaced with "not less than 30 minutes" in race signal AP.
SCHEDULE
Registration: as defined in Section 3.2 above.
All classes will have one (1) race on 5/24/08 and one (1) race on 5/25/08.

**Social Activities** - complimentary breakfast will be served from 8:00 AM until 9:30 AM Saturday morning. Beer, tea and lemonade will be served at the end of the race with the first keg opened 30 minutes after the first finisher and a new keg opened every 30 minutes thereafter. Dinner will be served at 5:30 PM. Music by a DJ will be available for dancing and entertainment. At the end of the return race on Sunday, a hamburger lunch will be available as well as beer, tea and lemonade.
MEASUREMENTS No measurement of boats is required. Any boats competing in a PHRF handicap fleet must have a valid handicap rating certificate on file with the Keel Fleet PHRF Handicap Committee prior to participating in the Regatta.
SAILING INSTRUCTIONS The sailing instructions are available on the AYC website and will be published in the regatta booklet available to all competitors at check in. One set will be provided to each registered boat.
THE COURSES
All boats will be assigned to a Class for scoring purposes. Such class assignments will be posted on the official notice board prior to the first race of the series.
All keel boats will be scored using the "Time on Distance" variant of the PHRF handicap rating system utilizing the PHRF of Lake Travis handicap values. All other boats will be scored using the Portsmouth handicap rating system utilizing US Sailing's 2006 Portsmouth Yardstick.
One (1) race is required to be completed to constitute a regatta.
On Saturday for Race 1, all mono hull boats and Large multi hull boat class(es) will start in the vicinity of the AYC and proceed to the finish line in the vicinity of the LVHP rounding the marks in the following order; B, 9, 12, 18, 22 and 25. Marks B, 9 and 22 shall be left to port. Marks 12, 18 and 25 shall be left to Starboard. 9.2 On Sunday for Race 2, all mono hull boats and Large multihull boat class(es) will start in the vicinity of the LVHP and proceed to the finish line in the vicinity of the AYC, rounding the marks in the following order 25, 22, 18, 12, 9 and B. Marks 22, 9 and B shall be left to Starboard. Marks 12 ,18 and 25 shall be left to Port. 9.3 On Saturday for Race 1 all Small multi hull boat classes will start in the vicinity of the AYC and proceed to the finish line in the vicinity of the designated LV Finish line. 9.4 On Sunday for Race 2 all Small multi hull boat classes will start in the vicinity of the LV Starting Line and proceed to the finish line in the vicinity of the AYC. 9.5 Definition of the multihull classes (large versus small) will be announced at the competitor's briefing and posted on the official notice board.
MARKS Marks of the course will be AYC Permanent Mark B and LCRA Channel Markers 9, 12, 18, 22 and 25. AYC permanent mark B is and orange torpedo buoy; LCRA Channel Marker 9 and 25 are a Green buoys and LCRA Channel Markers 12, 18 and 22 are Red buoys.
The starting and finishing Marks will be white buoys.

THE START Classes will start in the order posted on the Official Notice Board and announced at the participant's meeting.
The starting line will be between an orange flag on a race committee boat and the starting Mark.
Boats whose warning signal has not been made shall keep clear of the starting area.
THE FINISH The finish line shall be between an orange flag on a race committee boat and the finishing Mark.
TIME LIMIT The time limit for each class shall be six (6) hours on Saturday, and six (6) hours on Sunday. Boats that fail to finish within the time limit, or within 60 minutes after the first boat of their class finishes, whichever is later, will be scored one more point than the number of finishers in their class. This modifies Rules 35, A3, A4.1 and A4.2.
PROTESTS Protest flags must be red, have a minimum area of 30 square inches, and readily visible. This modifies Racing Rule 61.1(a), except that Code Flag "B" is always acceptable.
Protest forms will be available in the AYC Clubhouse and the Bar-K Park Recreation center at the Lago Vista. Written protests shall be filed with a race committee representative in the AYC Office or the Bar-K Park Recreation Center at Lago Vista(as appropriate) as soon as possible, but no later than 30 minutes after the Race Committee Signal Boat returns to shore. This time will be posted on the appropriate Official Notice Board.
Notices will be posted as soon as possible after the protest time limit to inform competitors of hearings in which they are parties or named as witnesses. Arbitration and protest committee hearings will be held at the location and time designated on the notice, as soon as practical after the protest time limit.
It is each participant's sole responsibility to check the protest notice(s) to determine if they need to attend a protest hearing.
ARBITRATION If available, an arbitration meeting will be held for all protests citing alleged breaches of Part 2 of the RRS.
Such arbitration meetings will be convened after a written protest form is delivered and will be made up of one designated representative as defined in RRS 63.3(a) for each party and the arbitrator. No witnesses will be permitted.
After hearing the testimony of each representative the arbitrator shall reach one of the following conclusions:
a. There was no breach of a rule or the protest is invalid. If the representatives agree, the protest is withdrawn and cannot be reopened. If any representative disagrees the matter goes to the Protest Committee for a hearing.
b. There was a breach of a rule by one or more of the boats involved. The representative(s) of the offending boats(s) have the option of accepting a 50 percent penalty or submitting the matter to the protest committee for a hearing. If the penalty is accepted, the matter cannot be reopened or made the subject of a redress request.
c. The matter should go to the protest committee for a hearing.
When the protest is referred to the protest committee, the Arbitrator will not be a member of the protest committee that hears the protest.
SCORING All completed races will be scored, this modifies RRS A2.
One completed race will constitute a Regatta.
SAFETY Any boat that withdraws from a race shall notify the Race Committee as soon as possible, by any practical means.
RADIO COMMUNICATION A boat shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communications not available to all boats.
The Race Committee will use VHF Channel 78 for communications.
PRIZES Three boats will constitute a class. Trophies will be awarded to helmspersons in accordance to the overall size of their respective Class as follows:
3 participants
1 trophy
4-6 participants
2 trophies
7-9 participants
3 trophies
10+ participants
1 additional trophy for each additional 3 participants
The Levins Trophy will be awarded to the boat with best corrected time for the race from AYC to Turnback Canyon.
ORDER OF STARTS Competitors are solely responsible for correctly identifying their designated class and associated numeral pennant.
