We raced at ASC yesterday, light (3knots) consistent wind and flat water, 20 degrees, dolphins etc. It was tough, , 30 dinghys, 3 cats, 2 rescue boats and a coach boat all braved the perfect winter conditions. We sailed loops, top mark was well set making the upwind interesting. Half way through 3 Hobie 16s joined in. Racing my mainsail only Mozzie downwind in such light conditions against Fireballs and other spinnaker equiped dinghys was surprising as the Mozzie was faster. I didn't even get splashed, unfortunately did not get on the wire but managed to lift a hull once ( while sitting on the leeward hull). Jeffs drove 350km from to race his Nacra 5.8 and a Hobie 18 raced as well. Next winter race is at Christies, Sunday 15th June, check the weather at the club using their website. Its high tide approx 2pm on 15th so I will checkout the ramp beforehand. http://www.christiessailing.net/Darryn Mozzie 1782

Hi Darryn, What place did you finish the race ? I couldn't see any results listed on the Christies website. I'm guessing you would have faster than the Hobie 16's unless they were sailed by midgets and heaps faster that the Hobie 18. Regards, Peter

Hi Peter, we sailed from Adelaide Sailing Club, I dont think the results where seriously recorded as I, and others, kept doing loops and not finishing. The wind was very light and it didn't prove very much that the Mozzie, which had the best power to weight ratio and least drag, was fastest. If we had a couple more knots of wind or some other boats like mine it would have got more serious. As it was, it turned out to be good practice for mark roundings, laylines and racing the dinghys.

Jeff, That's a bloody long way to go for an afternoon's racing. I thought only twicebitten did those sort of kms. Did the outside assistance provide the fix ?

Hi all,
1st Winter race at Christies tomorrow, Sunday. Racing starts at noon. The tides are against us with high water at 2.15pm. I just checked the ramp and launching will be ok but getting back onto the beach and up the ramp after racing will be somewhat harder but definitely possible.
Forecast is, Sunday Wind: E/NE 5/10 knots. Sea: calm to 0.5 m. Swell south of Marino Rocks: W/SW 0.5 m.

Hi all, One A class, Mozzie and 7 T/S's had a light wind drift around the course at Christies last Sunday with the race eventually shortened to one lap. Paul on his A was first home with myself second only just managing to finish before the wind dropped completely. Prior to the start was interesting following around two boats doing some match racing resulting in collisions and protests. With both boats being left behind at the start it was somewhat counter productive to racing but they seemed to be having fun . Its on again at Christies, this Sunday 22nd, 12 noon start, acres of beach to rig and unrig this week and cheap beer afterwards. Darryn Mozzie 1782

You've caught me out. But I've sold it now, never did sail it but it seemed like a good idea at the time. When I get back home I'll post a pic piggybacking it on top of my 5.8.

We raced at Adelaide yesterday, got the full 20knots and then some, enjoyed it so much I did an extra lap of the windward return course. 6 cats turned up and lots of dinghys. There was a photographer on the start boat I will post some pics as I get them. Results showing my time for 4 laps, most sailed three, single handed dinghys sailed two and a shorter course. http://www.yachting.org.au/site/yachting/results/adelaidesc/2008/club/winter/01RGrp1.htmNext Winter Race, Christies Beach Sun 20th July Heat 3 Midday Start good tides, plenty of beach. Hi David, I wont be making the drive for your winter series.
Christies is on tomorrow, 20th July, 12 noon start. Tides are good with 1130 being low. Seabreeze shows the wind allover the place with 3.5 metre swell which fits in with what I have been seeing all week, could be fun. I will post the bom forecast when it arrives.

Sunday Wind: N/NW 15/20 knots, easing to 10/15 knots during the afternoon ahead of a S/SW change 10/15 knots late afternoon, increasing to 18/23 knots in the evening. Sea: 1 to 1.5 m, rising to 2 m in the evening. Swell south of Marino Rocks: W around 1 m.
Ramp looks good.

How did it go yesterday Jeff? We raced at Adelaide, 3 cats, Mozzie, Arrow and Nacra5.8, lots of dinghys, counted 20 between races and there was some casulties early on. Two races, 15 to 20knots Northerly, tide opposing the wind. I think Jeff had a problem before the race and returned to the beach on the 5.8. Paul on the Arrow and myself started with the Sharpies, 470, Fireballs etc. I hung back at the start, avoiding the scrum, tacked onto port hit the layline plus a bit because it is more fun footing and rounded 150metres in front of the first dinghy. Surfed downwind, still drawing away from the dinghys with their spinnakers up and continued doing laps. Sailed two quick races. Highlights where racing aginst high quality dinghy sailors and of course the high sustained speeds that you get on day like that . I sailed the same 3 lap windward return course as the Div 2 dinghys. The results are very close, I think our handicap of 84 works well. No real problem with the boat, this time we hooked on and took off straight out to sea but took a while to get organised, once organised we really took off jumping waves that just kept getting bigger, we pulled one of the downhaul pulleys of the mast but were still able to pull it on once we took up the slack. We pulled out because I couldn't figure out how to power it down enough to not jump of one wave into the middle of the next wave and get half washed off. We should have gone in the race but didnt realise the course was more sheltered in shore and the waves that really hit us were further out than the course. Once packed up and in the bar it struck us as we watched you just how far out we had gone, I remember looking way in shore at the start boat on our way in and we wouldn't have had to race in the bigger waves. I'm learning more each time and this time I was in control and didn't come close to tipping, the video I took of us was pretty dramatic to look at and shows me how I can improve alot. See you next month. regards Jeff

I would be curious to see that video. Could you burn me a copy? Waves can get very big off ASC and the tide made them steeper and more confused. If I had damaged my downhaul system it would have made my Mozzie very difficult to sail. It would be even more critical on the 5.8 with a dacron sail so maybe you couldn't apply the exteme amount of downhaul needed on a day like that to depower? Racing again on 17th at Christies and next month the hot up series starts, sailing on every Saturday Darryn Mozzie 1782

No worries burning a disc for you, pm me your address, I'd welcome any tips. I'm going to post in open forum a question about what program to download to edit the video so I can cut it. I've got to learn how to handle those waves as I can see the fun to be had. I think I have to pull the main on more to lift the hull more so that the next wave doesnt crash into us. regards Jeff

Jeff I think your boat is sold as a 5.8NA in US. Might be good to ask a question in the open forum about setting the boat up and depowering the rig. Good idea to sheet in and ride a bit higher and maybe take a step back when you see a big wave upwind saves the sudden deceleration as the bows dig into the next on landing. Of course better to avoid those waves if possible I cant recommend any video editing software, we use a couple of different types but there all crap, I think an apple is required to do it properly. I have attached one of Peters pics from Sunday, me again http://www.petermuirhead.com/Darryn

See how agreeably flat the camera makes the water. I agree it is funny talking about the 5.8 in a mozzie forum but its become the winter racing thread. When you see the video you will see I couldnt get any further back, I had my feet in the foot holders so I wouldnt leave the boat as the boat dropped over the waves, its really funny to see my crews feet both leave the deck and then when he touches again we crash through the next wave. It was over one wave through the next, I didnt notice any deceleration on landing the girl just kept ploughing through. regards

I am bearing away down a wave and the camera boat was on the crest, doesn't look like that at all. I doubt anyone minds talking about tuning a 5.8 here, but there are guides online and they make a good starting point http://goosemarine.com.au/Articles%20%7C%20Photos has some interesting stuff. I'm going to post it when I work out how, it doesn't show me in a particulary good light but I reckon the helpfull hints will outweigh the embarassment. So far I've cut of the bits like leaving the beach and where the camera was on the wrong side etc so from 45mins its now 14 and shrinking. I tuned it as per the Goose marine tips. I even have Scott Andersons "Advanced Catamaran Racing" and Rick Whites books that go into detail about this exact boat. regards

Wouldn't mind but I just went to Cape Jervois and back today to pick up this stack of boats for the kids.

Lacepede Bay Sailing Club hasn't finalised our dates yet. The Cape Jaffa Regatta, 3 races Saturday, 15km straight run Lauching at Cape Jaffa down to the clubhouse in Kingston on Sunday will be mid January 09. Kids can go in this race subject to weather they leave early and travel as a group with their own rescue boat not far off the beach then with approx 1km to go they race down around a bouy back to the club. Any kids not happy pull up on the beach and get picked up by groundcrew, no rocks on any beaches in this race. The Earth movers classic 5km SW to the Butchers Gap drain, 10km NE to the Blackford drain, 5km SE back to the bar ( I mean club ) will be in mid April if enough want to have extra races on Sunday that could be organised. I'll start a new thread for our club sailing once we have the date's, it'd be excellent if every club started a thread in open forum with their regatta's posted and update as they get newer. I've tentatively organised that those visitors that want to, can camp on our lawn at the club with the cat mast up and have access to showers etc for a small fee to cover costs or I can organise better accomodation for those who want it. Our club now has a Mozzie on the water so would be great if some Mozzies showed their stuff. regards

Looking at the calender I am wondering where these races will fit in. Never enough weekends Can download the draft calender from this page. http://www.sa.yachting.org.au/default.asp?Page=36552Another good site to put your regatta on. http://home.vicnet.net.au/~mosquito/Any details on the new Mozzie owner? I raced at Christies on Sunday, I was the only cat, 8 sportboats/TS's. 2 Races, 20knots. Good fun. Next race is the hotup series at ASC Sat 6th Sep (3 weeks ) Darryn Mozzie 1782

The dates are fairly fixed for us as the Lobster Regatta is on the same weekend as the Cape Jaffa, Lobster fest based around eating and drinking. The Earthmovers is our last weekend of sailing. As for our new Mozzie sailing member at Lacepede sailing club, he purchased the Mozzie I temporarily owned but he's a novice and he wants to lay low for a while. As soon as he gives approval I'll get him on the register. Unfortunately I cant make the Adelaide Sailing club September race ( not that I last long anyway) were going to take 3 or 4 cats stacked and do the family camp and sail down at Lake Bonney on that date, already got the site booked on the water so we can pull the boats up next to the tents. regards

Racing is scheduled at the club. http://www.adelaidesailingclub.com.au/I am going down to the club for a race but I doubt we will get the numbers to justify setting a course. I dont know of any mid week racing going on yet, usually doesn't start until day light saving. Darryn

Thanks Darryn, I'll be in Adelaide for the school holidays so I'm planning to bring the "A" to do the next two Saturdays and probably will bob around during the week. Is there any racing at Christies in that time? regards

Not at Christies but Milang on 4th and 5th Oct would suit the A, and there will be a few other A's to race.

Thanks Darryn I'll have to see what plans the family has regarding the Milang regatta but I'll definately be at Adelaide SC this Saturday. Is it warm enough for you to sail now Danny? regards
