G'day this is a great event held on the 11th,12th and 13th of June long weekend at the 480 hectare Hazelwood pondage which is the cooling waters for the power stations so the water never gets below 22 degrees. Up to 180 cats and dinghys for 3 days with typical lake sailing, in the morning and late afternoon there is not much wind, but there always seems to be one windy day where it gets pretty hectic, boats going everywhere, I pitchpoled a couple of years ago on the Taipan 5.7. Great social side to it with cheap camping where groups of Mozzy, Taipan, etc set up their communal campfires. People that camp get their own beach to launch from and everybody can leave their masts up. Great facilities, hot showers, toilets, good clubrooms but no bar so BYO booze. The town of Morwell is not far away for motel accommodation, supplies etc and I was able to get an aluminium rudder crossbar tube from the Bunnings hardware on a Sunday when I broke it on my A class.
It is winter so the nights are cold but the warm water of the lake makes sailing pleasant and sailing out into the mist in the morning is a great experience as you slowly glide through the mist hanging on the lake trying to find the start line, some years you can just make out other boats close up and have no idea where the mark is but every ones going slow when that happens so it’s not a problem then the wind comes up and blows the mist away.
