Anybody got any plans, construction details or sources to purchase the "poleless" snuffer hoops I have seen on some boats (mostly the Mossies)?? They appear to simply attach to the bridle wires somehow.

Thanks!
Kirt

G'day Captain

I didn't realise that Mozzies sailed in USA. I haven't been able to find any reference to them on the net. Australia and South Africa are the only ones I'm aware of. By snuffer hoops, I presume these are rings that pull down/up to close the spinaker before recovery. Most of the Mozzie's in Oz operate a spinaker shute attached to the bridle. The spinaker has three attachment points in the centre that the recovery line is attached to, which colapse the spinaker before pulling it into the shute.

Actually, I've got a Taipan 4.9- based on the Mossie but not a Mossie I've never seen a Mossie over here but wouldn't be surprised if there were one or two homebuilt ones somewhere. I'm trying to rig a spi that tacks at the bows for cat rig sailing, doing away with the pole and attendant weight/complexity/windage/cost but still want to incorporate a snuffer since it's just me to launch/retrieve and stuffing in the bag just takes too long.

Thanks!

Hi Kirt

This is a photo of the first one I built (no gel coat) so you can see how the bridle and the ring in the middle just pass through holes cut in the moulding.

Thanks Tim!
Turns out I can get one from Aus so I just ordered one- I have more money than time right now!

Thanks again! Will let you know how my experiment turns out-

Kirt,
Be sure you have the room for a Mossie-style snuffer mouth. My bridle angles do not have the room under them without lowering the spin pole too far. I guess the Mossies have a higher bridle joint. Note the dimensions on Tim's post.

Who did you order it from and what did it cost?

Kirt,
Do you plan to use this without a pole as the title of the post suggests? Like in your avatar where you have a tack line and no pole (old school cat spin setup)?

or is it that the snuffer isn't attached to the pole, but the pole is still there?

Sorry if I seem obtuse, but you asked about a poleless snuffer and the pics have poles in them

David-
I ordered from a company I found on the Victoria Mossie page (it Was Frecheville Boats or some such- page is actually for a company that appears primarily to restore wooden powerboats!). But I emailed them on their contact page and he gave me the price, I believe around 250 Aus with shipping- (Lots less than the old Guck CF snuffer mouth I bought years ago for ~$800 US!). Since I already have poles with snuffers this is for use with no pole so pole clearance isn't an issue.
