The boats are all in at Fort Lauderdale. There was only 11 minutes and 47 seconds difference between the first boat and the last boat. It was a reach most of the way from Miami and several boats were able to use their spinnakers only for the home stretch to the beach after rounding the jetty.

(Results: First number is finish time of day in military time, second number is elapsed time in hours and minutes, and third number is time behind leader.)

The 2002 Worrell 1000 is just around the corner and we at Catamaran Sailor Magazine and www.catsailor.com are extremely excited about this year's event coverage.

And we got this letter from Chris Runge of Team Castrol:

So here we go again ...

The bags are packed, the flight is booked, all is set to go, or so it seems ...

But what of the thoughts that precede the race?

The winds, the weather ... the surf from last year, all still clear and easily remembered.

They all play into what you take to the start this year.

You have to somehow lay it all aside, yet remember it too. For it must be new, and it must be what was.

Sure the past lingers and stays, but the approach must be from a newer angle, a more experienced one, one that learns from the last ride up the coast, that draws on the successes and the failures. It remembers the sand bars, it remembers the currents ... it remembers the right turn here and the exit there. It remembers the meals, and it remembers the toast to finishing.

You see, experience is a great teacher, as long as we listen, and as long as we learn. It remembers it all, and it filters out what was right and makes it fresh ... the image clear as if it just happened. It takes what might have been wrong and tucks it away ... " the old days always seem better."

Still, we shall raise the glass and toast to another grand trip up the coast ... better than before and certainly to be surpassed by the next.

So here we go again ... refreshed and full of anticipation of what awaits each of us; the sponsors, the sailors, the team managers, the groundcrew, the race officials and even me...

"The Boat Guy"
Team Castrol

Awesome Coverage for the First Time
This website is going to have some really great coverage of the Worrell 1000 this year:
*Video (near-live with short-time editing)
*Live-tracking of the each boat in the fleet (always knowing who is in the lead, who is coming on strong, who capsized, who went offshore, who hugged the shoreline, who went aground and where, etc.)
*Aircraft coverage
*Faster Reporting
*Reporters all over the beach, giving you all the coverage, and with different slants on every story.
* Hot Line Beach Reports (constant reports all day long)

Video Coverage
We will have three professional video experts with major network backgrounds (i.e., 20/20, Dateline, 60 Minutes, etc.) shooting, editing and encoding exciting footage of the Worrell this year. We may have as many as seven people shooting video and still pictures at the same time. There will be some short edit time, but you will be seeing the action very shortly after it happens.

Aircraft Coverage
There has never been good aircraft coverage of the boats offshore in the past. While we don't intend to totally cover the race in that manner, we are making arrangements to rent fixed-wing airplanes for several legs to get videos, pictures and stories from on the actual race course.

Faster Uploading/Reporting
One of the big problems experienced was uploading the data (pictures, stories, and other data) to the website for you to view. We have always been restricted to telephone lines in the past offering only slow transfer speeds. This year we have our own satellite system with much faster speeds -- we will be able to get video, stories and pictures up for your viewing much quicker.

Reporters
We will have numerous experienced reporters covering differing and varying stories.., and all with a very diversified approach.

We'll Have It All
So, we will be offering live action, news and interview videos-- stories from different sections of the beach and with different slants-- realtime visual updates of each boat of the fleet on the course with relative positions, speeds and directions.-- aircraft coverage with video, pictures and news reports.
This is a first in small boat racing.

Great Exposure for Advertisers
Last year our site registered 1.8 million hits in the two week period of the race, and this year are expecting over 4 million. By the way, our normal average is between 1.5 and 2.5 million hits per month should you be interested in a regular advertising campaign (we are the only ones reaching the sailors). And this site is ranked at 23,000th in the world – the largest boating site overall (the closest is Boat US at 30,000th). For rankings of other relative sites, click on <http://www2.catsailor.com/AdRates_Site.html>
Our ad special for the Worrell 1000 Pages is still very reasonable for a 460x55 pixel adbanner (can be animated) and your ad will rotate throughout the text and throughout the Worrell Coverage Pages. Rather than being an ad in the corner, or at the top of the page, we will be using adbanners to break up articles and stories. This means a lot more exposure and a lot more folks looking at your ad.
The 2002 Worrell Pages will stay on the website for a few years, so you are really getting two or three years of advertising for pennies.

Please do not hesitate to email or call.
Thanks,
Rick
