Apres Race Parties in Tybee Island, GA
Teams Split in Which Place to Go

After a grueling 125-mile leg, lots of capsizes, some cuts and bruises, a bit of exhaustion, most of the teams decided to head for a party. About half of them went to a nightclub that was offereing free beer to the sailors and some pretty raucous music.

Others took up an invitation from Jim and Roxanne Stone (Jim has sailed in the Worrell 1000 previously and Roxanne has been ground crew -- and they have a beautiful home near the beach).

Too bad they didn't all go to the Stone's home. We were treated to huge hot-broiled filet mignon and chicken breast with all the condiments and ice-cold beer. Who could ask for more.

The house could easily be featured in a decorator's magazine -- mostly done in a nautical theme.

And to add to the entertainment, Bob Feldman played his tape of the 2001 Worrell 1000. And it is very done, I must say. It is on a par with the video years ago by National Geographic. Be sure to get a copy from Feldman. He has an ad in our Classifed Ad Page.

The hand rails for the stairs were handrails off an old boat and very classy

Sorry for the digression, but was really impressed with the decor.

Special Thanks to Tom Leobold -- Our Video Guru and Satellite Magician

I would like to thank Tom Leobold for doing such a great job on the video. Also, we were about to give up on the satellite dish idea -- just could not get the thing dialed in correctly. But Tom showed he was made up of True Grit and persevered until the thing kicked in. Until today he was the only one that could make it happen. I would try and try and along would come Tom and bingo! We have internet access.

And the value of dish is amazing -- we seem to be only ones that can upload video files in a reasonable amount of time. Still a lot to be desired, but far superior to phone lines.
Again, thanks to Tom. Tom and his wife have their own video production company in the St. Pete - Tampa area.

He will be replaced on Sunday by Tim Johnson. Tim is my partner for the teaching videos we put out this past year and also really knows what he is doing in the video business.

And Ned Barbee just popped in with more video he has taken for Baywind and Tommy Bahama. Just click on the hot links below to view them:

Cheering Arrival in Tybee Island -- Castrol Takes the Lead
Home Town Team Finishes Fourth and Drops to 2nd Overall

Castrol hit the finish line well ahead of the fleet and moved into an overall lead for the race. Tybee Island's so-so finish drops them into second spot 7:37 behind Castrol

However, it is still a very close race between the top six teams. Also in the mix is Tommy Bahama, Alexandedrs, San Antonio, and Athletes in Action -- all within 20 minutes of the leader. It is still anybody's race.

San Antonio hit the beach just second before Tybee Island

Tybee Island took fourth and dropped to 2nd overall

Apologies -- could not dial in the satellite dish this afternoon, so the video will not be coming until we do so.

And, They're Off -- Floundering, But Off
It Looked More Like a Tangle of Coat Hangers

It was an ugly send off from Jacksonville Beach for the longest leg of the race -- it is around 125 miles from Jacksonville to Tybee Island. There was practically no wind. The surf was not particularly big or violent, but in the very light winds it really played havoc with the teams. Just look at the picture below and you can see what they were up against.

Getting Ready for the Start -- Leg 6 from Jacksonville to Tybee Island

Winds are expected to be about the same as they have been -- 15 mph out of the southeast. Some sailors tend to sail the rhumb line (straight line directly to Tybee) which takes you some 50 miles offshore. Others prefer to hug the shore line and pick up the sea breezes.

It usually pays to sail the shore line. I remember in my old day of 1987 when I sailed the rhumb line directly to Cocoa Beach. We were in 3rd place and passing boats, but I went the direct route. Most of the fleet stayed close to shore and got the benefits of the sea breeze.., and they were beam reaching the entire time.

Meanwhile, we were sailing lower and slower in very light air -- the sea breeze did not reach out as far offshore as we were.

Stand by for a start!
