Dirty Pool

Young Matt Payne, who is one of the Race Officials, was napping on the beach while awaiting the arrival of the fleet in Myrtle Beach. Some of the ladies? Did him up just fine – they painted his toenails and put lipstick on him. You just can't trust anybody, can you?

One sailors commented, "With all this beating into the wind this year, this should be called the Worrell 1500."

Team Rudee's Restaurant's cheerleaders, fondly called the "Rudettes" are throwing a series of small parties for all the members of this traveling circus. They are offering sub sandwiches at Hatteras (1st come, 1st served), and there will be a hospitality suite at the 21st St Holiday in Virginia Beach that will be available on arrival.

A special thanks to a special guy -- Rick Bliss. Usually a racer in this event Bliss is recovering from shoulder surgery. But he just can't stay away. Is he ground crew? You bet! And for nearly every team. Carl Roberts of Lions International called in last night on a cell phone saying his jib track was pulling loose. Bliss jumped to the challenge, even though he was not associated with this team, and met them upon their arrival with tools and parts in hand. Bliss is a true spirit of this sport and this event.

They're off to the Graveyard of the Atlantic!

Randy Smyth said, "It looks like the wind is offshore, so it looks like a spinnaker run to the Cape and then a reach to Hatteras."

The wind is light and the surf is down. The start was rather uneventful. But that doesn't mean that this leg will be. Stay tuned -- last year was devastating to most of the teams. Cape Lookout destroyed a bunch of team last year.

This is the first leg that the teams have not had a beat up the coastline. There were a lot of happy faces as the teams were pushed out into the surf.

Team Chick's Beach drifts in to Regain Lead

"It was a transition race, it was great sailing until the inlet, then the wind totally shut off at Hatteras and then it was 1 1/2 knots of current going the wrong way," said Randy Smyth of team Chick's Beach upon his first place finish at Cape Hatteras. Similar sentiments were echoed by Brett Dryland of team Rudee's Restaurant.

It was a Champagne finish however, for team Pomodoro. Both Hans Meijer and Brian Lambert were sprayed with champagne as they crossed the finish line. Hans said "It's great to be here and it's daylight." This is the first time that team Pomodoro has made it to the finish at this leg of the race. Needless to say, no wind transition could dampen team Pomodoro's parade.
