Bad Breaks for Teams Tybee Island and Pomodoro at Cape Hatteras Start

It was a fanstastic start for Teams Chick's Beach and Rudee's Restaurant. Not so, however for Teams Tybee Island and Pomodoro.
Leading Teams, Chick's Beach and Rudee's Restaurant are Launched Through the Surf at the Start in Cape Hatteras

Team Tybee Island returned to the beach immediately after the start with a broken rudder arm while Team Pomodoro got about 1/2 mile out before returning with a broken traveller car. Ground crew for both teams hustled to replace the broken parts. Team Tybee Island was re-launched into the surf after only 9 minutes, and Team Pomodoro after 11 minutes.

Team Outerbanks had a decent launch into the surf only to capsize just outside of it and then again upon trying to right the boat.

We expect some very tired teams later this afternoon given the 25 + knot winds they set out in this morning. Brett Dryland probably said it best this morning, "It's going to be a tight reach to the inlet and then nothing but work the rest of the leg."

    Team Turtle Rescued
According to Scott McDonald of Team Turtle, he and his team mate had just rounded the point at Cape Hatteras when a wave came at them and they then were airborn about 8 feet. As they landed they were almost dead downwind when their shroud snapped and their mast came down. Scott was disappointed and discouraged, but said he will be back to try it again next year. The team had to be rescued and their boat was towed back to shore.

    Smyth Suffers From Infected Knee
Randy Smyth, skipper of Team Chick's Beach limped off of the beach today. Apparently Smyth suffered a rope burn to his knee back in Fort Lauderdale which became infected. He spent most of his night at the local Kill Devil Hills medical clinic where he received intravenous antibiotics. Although he must return for an additional round of antibiotics early tomorrow morning, Smyth states that he will have no problem finishing the race.
