Clay,

No appologies necessary. But please bear with me when I set something else straight.

Taipans, Blades, Capricorns and A-cats don't have a teardrop shaped mast but a true wingsection. The last is alot more eliptical and has less width per given cord. Also the point of maximum width is further back. The behaviour difference between teardrop shape masts and wingmast is actually quite noticeable. One can not overstate the difference.

All other boats like Tornado's, F18's (except capricorn), and the nacra/hobie types all have teardrop shaped masts.

The Taipan 4.9 / Taipan F16 / Blade F16 boats use a 150 mm x 63 mm wing shaped mast.
The Taipan 5.7 uses (as you say) a 158 mm by 74 mm wing shaped mast
I think the capricorn has its own section but I think it to be close to the Taipan 5.7 dimensions.
The A-cats typically use something like 140 mm by 55 mm

The crossections of all are pretty much the same although the larger boats use a larger section to withstand the higher bending loads.

Comparison : From memory the Tiger / FX-one mast is a 145 mm by 90 mm section of teardrop shaped crossection (=circular front and a curved triangle at the rear)

I hope this helps.
