I'm putting an extremely long asymetric spinnaker pole (15') on a Viper 640, and need a sailmaker to create a fairly flat masthead screamer for it. It may have to be custom dimensions.
- Does Randy Smythe still run a sail company? Does anyone know the URL?
- Any other ideas for a sailmaker to create this sail?

Thanks
Jeff

You can also talk with Jay and Pease Glaser. Jay owns Glasers Sails and used to sail with and work with randy Smythe back in the Danger Sail days. They are competent sail makers who are on the leading edge of catamaran sail making. Contact info is glasersails.com

You are asking a bunch of multihull guys about monohull sails? Huh?? Why don't you ask the Viper 640 class experts? A really good monohull loft around here is Schurr Sails in Pensacola, Florida.

We (this site's www.OnLineMarineStore.com) are dealers and sell Hooters (same thing you are talking about).
Smyth calls his Screachers, Calvert calls his Hooters. Both are the same, roller-furling, faster than hell sails that reach, run and can sail upwind in lighter winds.
Go to http://store.catsailor.com/tek9.asp?pg=products&grp=267
and pick out one that would fit your boat. Of course, we would need fore-triangle dimensions, where you want to sheet the sail, etc.
You can email me directly at rick@catsailor.com
Thanks
Rick

Jeff,

Personally, I wouldn't spend that kind of cash on something like that if the sailmaker is not involved in the class. Kinda like A class sails. It won't be as good or as fast as one made with class experience.

My 2 sense,

I agree with Bob. A custom sail from a major loft will be expensive. If you just want to play when the air is light, look at Rick's sails or used sails of the right dimensions. If you want to race, go to someone with Class experience and be prepared to spend some money.

Even if you decide to have a custom sail built, you might want to play with some sails on a day when it's too light to do anything else. You learn a lot. For example try attaching your jib to the end of the pole

I think you are correct to inquire about one of these sails from the multihull arena. About 8 years ago I did some R & D and added a 10' pole to my Hobie 33. I wasted a lot of time with the mono hull types. The Viper sails very similar to a multihull down wind, also like the Hobie 33. It has taken years for the Melges 24's to catch up and develop their chutes like a multhull sail. Monohull sailors look at the equation backwards. ie. they want to go "down wind" instead they need to think "fast".
We have had Randy Smyth develop that sail for us as well as many for the RC 27. I would recommend him. I would also suggest to contact Bill Roberts for thoughts as he has been spending lots of money over the years with sails that have to go very fast. I point this out as a spinnaker if not designed correctly, will limit your top end speed. Feels fast but not as fast as it could be.
Anyway, the suggestions about using the sail makers in the class is a good one, except in your case you are going outside of the class arena. This somehting I am familiar with and is not ussually supported by the class sail makers. Making using them sometimes difficult. (multihull guys- monohull sailors are a different breed, they are not used to "developments" like we are in the multihulls, generally you are not as welcomed.) That said, for any monohull sail builder your boat is not the same thing. Randy has develop a lot for the F-trimarans which I would prefer as a developer for a go fast oversized spinnaker.
