here's a shot showing the tack line release trigger. The spi downhaul is fed through the small steel loop then to the pulley, when the tension is taken up on the downhaul it releases the spinlock cleet fiited under the tramp on the front beam.

At present I'm sticking with just the one block. It was a bit difficult today to grip the sheets but that was mainly due to them being brand new, I'm sure that once they've worn in a bit there shouldn't be any problems. Too many blocks takes away any feeling and gybing slickness can also suffer. As for the snuffer end position it certainly cuts down on the downhaul friction which can be caused by coming up through a grommet in the tramp. 555 is one stiff baby and feels a load lighter than "Little Feat" I did have a little more weather helm than I would normally like but apart from that and a few little tweaks with the downhaul loops on the kite everything surpassed my expectations I can't wait to sail her again in a breeze. Which hopefully will be next Sunday.
I was thinking about copying the above-tram snuffer bag end for doublehanding as well. Any reason not to do so for doublehanding vs. singlehanding?
The spi fairlead looks good, another thing to think about for us. The tramp "hooks" or rings on Marks boat was nice. But why do the sailmaker still use the web loops on the tramp instead of sewing metal rings into the loops or using the glass rod system? Another small thing while I am drooling over the pics. Why are the chainplates om the outside? It's no big deal, but personally I think the boat looks better with the chainplates on the inside.
Is that you holding the spi sheet Mark? Always nice to be able to put a face to the personalities on catsailor.com.

Be interested to find out your mast rake (and assuming the mast foot is in the same place as we have different beams) as I'm not sure how much weather helm is "right" as the 17 had almost none, but my 16 appears to go well with a fair bit), I believe we have the same mainsail.
Been OK with gybing so far as I have 2 ratchamatics and so they run free as soon as the tension is off.

The aft end of the bag will get in the way of the self tacker.
Looks great, Mark. Very interesting setup you've got on the kite with the tack release thing. Does that pull the top of a spinlock? Or something else? Looking forward to seeing it in action...

You not coming to Datchet, then? If you come to Datchet you've got an excuse to sail on Saturday too
In the photo of the Spi fairlead you'll notice a yellow line, that is the spi tack line. Once the tack has been deployed the spinnlock cleat jams automatically due to the pressure. I drilled a 2mm hole through the top of the spinnlock cleat for the trigger line attachment and added the loop on the other end which the spi downhaul line is led through. It is harder to set up than the single line system and needs quite a bit of tweaking to get just right but the Spi hoist is so much quicker and (easier) than the single line the extra hassle seems worth it. As for Datchet I would love to attend but I wouldn't be able to afford the divorce settlement.

Can you post more pictures of this system ? I still don't really get how it works. I thought it was still a single line system.

I ran my kitebag on top of the tramp for a while and works really good until you turn the boat over on its side with the spinnaker out. It was really difficuly getting around to the up side of the tramp to recover the spinnaker without fully turtleing the boat. At least with the bag on the under side you can reach the recovery rope whilst preventing the boat from fully turning over.
