I am looking for a good insurance company (backs up their claims) so I can insure my H16 and Access Dinghy's. Has anyone found an insurance company they like with appropriate rates?

I've found that Geico is great for car insurance, but their boat insurance (not acutally geico insurance... they refer you to some subsidiary or something) is questionable. for one thing, I never EVER (period of 3 years) got a document that described what was covered on the boat and what was not, despite repeated requests.

Also, when I called to have the insurance switched from one boat to another, they refused to carry the boat because one of the hulls had been replaced and it was therefore a "remanufactured vessel". I got quotes from 4 other companies that had no problem with the new hull.

Edited by Sailortect on 07/24/01 12:12 PM.

I have had good luck with Allstate.

Always check to make sure the insurance covers ocean sailing. Some companies I looked at excluded ocean sailing.

Also, you can insure your boat for replacement value or agreed to value. I insure my boat for the cost of 2 new hulls plus a little. I figure this will cover almost anything

Are you looking for full insurance or liability? I have a substantial amount of liability with my homeowners policy for a sailboat under 21'. Neat how it always seems your getting screwed and then you find a little nugget like that.

[color:blue][b]Jake
[color:blue][b]Nacra 5.2 (2112)

I started with Prudential, who processed claims for two broken masts promptly, then dropped me.
I currently use Allstate, and feel very comfortable, but have not had to make any claims.
My main reason for insurance is for race coverage, and I would advise you to make sure the policy covers the activities you plan, some specifically exclude" racing" - for instance, your auto policy, and perhaps your motorbat policy would exclude racing. Also make sure others are covered even if you aren't on the boat, and that you're covered when you're on a different boat.
Jim Casto
N5.5 uni

Good advice - my policy does cover racing but now I'm going to have to check the rest....hmmm. Thanks!

[color:blue][b]Jake
[color:blue][b]Nacra 5.2 (2112)

i tried geico for my boat insurance. i agree. great car insurance, but their bout insurance SUCKS. after they issued the policy, i was billed and the written policy had some exclusions that i didn't care for. the main one was that the boat was not insured in the event of a named storm (even when on the trailer). they also quoted the policy based on a 3 month lay up period. as it turned out, the boat was not insured for use during the lay up period unless i called them before using it. i called west marine and they got me 3 quotes. all cheaper and without any of the geico restrictions.

I use BoatsUS. When I shopped around they by far gave me the best deal without very many exclusions. I have never had to make a claim so I don't know how well they respond.
