I have 2 Silva 75's on the tramp; one each side by the front beam.

I use the Garmin Etrex, and I quick-clip it to the shroud on the high hull and lay it on the tramp.

Garmin 76S, has digital compass for those slow days and I've found it to be more durable/robust than the eTrex Legends (destroyed 3 in the Worrell in one week)

I have used a Garmin for some time now.
We were due to do the Worrell some years ago and I was experimenting with the best place to mount it whilst sailing. I came up with all sorts of drysuit pockets on my arms and legs, but found that I was looking away from the bows/sails too long to drive the boat properly. I then came across the answer which was to put it in the mesh pocket on the chest of my crews bouyancy aid, the perfect spot! He just had to spin it round when we tacked/gybed. [ this assumes that you are double trapping]

I always thought in distance racing, navigating fell on the shoulders of the crew so the skipper could pay attention to keeping the pointy end up.... at least that's how I've always done it.

Thank you for those replies and I will follow all of them up.
But...am I crazy to want to find digital one with a big face that I can mount upright in the middle of the tramp a foot south of the main beam????
They say they are waterproof to a metre........
