Use an underwater housing.

Those Oregon Scientific cameras are not as good as the Hero3 offered by RockledgeEngineering.com

Why is that? The one in my link is wireless and waterproof and mounts easily on a helmet.

that was kinda short on my part wasn't it...sorry, didn't mean to be crass.

The video resolution is considerably better on the Hero3...Here's the raw video from a short stupid video I took to test the camera during the Tybee500:

(it's uploading now so you may need to give it a second).

We have been experimenting with both cams, the Hero3 has better quality and imaging (the picture will not be as blown out in the sun), has a better focal range for catamaran use, has sound (although its not great), and the buttons are easier to use. Plus they are only $139 which is not bad for a submersible mini video cam.

This video is all Hero3:
http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid823619038?bclid=24526455&bctid=663334121

It comes with a USB cable and you just drag and drop the video files onto your computer like a digital cam.

I recommend fixing it to your boat on the boom, mast, or other location though as opposed to holding it (unless you've got time to hold it steady).

If you would like one you can get it here:

Thanks,
Brian

For $140 thats pretty sweet. If you loose it for some reason it wouldn't be that heart breaking as loosing a spendy regular camcorder, or the spendy case it takes to protect it.

I'm working on getting stock footage to build a yearly video or something. We weren't really setup well with mounting options for the Tybee so we didn't get a whole lot there this year.

Not to try to undercut anybody on prices, but after our event was cut short in Cocoa, I stopped by Ronjon's for some trinkets after we de-rigged the wreck. Hero3 for $79.00...

Sure that was the '3? I've seen two different products for sale online, the basic one for that price, but the Hero3 at $139.

It looked like the same one I had just purchased, pretty sure it was the 3, but at this point I guess I wouldn't bet my life on it if there are other versions available. I'd be happy if I was wrong.

We have sand from Cocoa still in the damaged hull, maybe I should road trip to return the sand and check out Ronjon's to be sure. Road trip!

I heard about that too but I was told that the video quality is much less in earlier Hero3 units (why they don't call one or the other a Hero4 to distinguish them, I'll never know).

The Digital Hero is the cheaper VGA version.

The Hero 3 is the new 3 MPixel version, be careful, they are not the same! You want the Hero 3.
