On the topic of stiffness, what sort of deflection are ppl getting in their main beam under full rig tension? And, what deflection are ppl getting in their bows (transversely) under full rig tension?
I found it difficult to maintain rig tension on my ply mozzie because there was heaps of deflection in both of these. I managed to increase the dolphin striker tension which helped reduce the main beam deflection.
The mossie uses a small [55mm?] square section for the front and rear beam which in itself isn't very stiff.
Or you can replace them with nylon lock bolts, and do not worry about them working there way loose ever again. Does not mean you should not check every so often.

Wrong Robi. Same principle applies. I have never had any other nuts then nylon lock nuts. The only difference is that they work themselves loose a little slower.

Wrong WOUTER! I am an aviation mechanic and we use nylon lock nuts for a [censored] reason. They are not supposed to work there way loose. You are using the wrong nuts then. Purchase quality stuff, not junk and you wont have problems.
Did you not read my entire post! Just because you have nylon nuts does not mean you should not check them.

Cheap though, $45 a beam and 35mm flex was less then most of the other cats mentioned.
Have you measured the flex on your 14ft cat?

Not accurately but I've recently made a new front beam from an un-milled mast section and it seems much stiffer than it was. I will do a measurement shortly just for interest sake.
