Ok guys I need a new Trap for my H 16... does anyone have a Black one? if so how is it? How about a trap wiht a hicker foot straps? good bad? what about rope bag? who has what and how do they like it?

2nd unrelated question... I am about 250 and I sail with my buddy he is about 130 is it possible to get on one hull? or will the boat just sink...????

I think that you must mean a tramp... the trap is the system that allows you to trapeze off the side of the boat.

I have a black tramp on my Nacra 5.2 and it is nice. I figured it owuld get hot but it never really does.

I am not sure about the 16, but I know on the Hobie 14 you definently need hiking straps.

Once again I am no Hobie 16 expert but in my mind you all should be able to fly a hull but it will take some pretty serious wind.

380 lbs is a lot for a H16. It pushes the leeward hull deep in the water, slowing it, and making it prone to sticking the lee bow when pushed. But can be done with skill.
Black mesh tramps are quite durable, may need to be restitched occaisionally (spend money on teflon thread, it lasts longer). Hiking straps sewn to the tramp are an absolute must to be able to hike out(lean outward) from the tramp. Hiking from the tramp with 380 lbs might easily require 20+ knots of wind to fly a hull. More to fly a hull trapezing. Could be wild!
I enjoyed the 16 the most as a solo boat, which seemed the best way to keep the weight far enough aft. I had a footstrap mounted as far aft as possible on each hull, and felt really secure and in control, solo on the wire.

Buy a Hobie tramp. They are worth every penny (and are required for racing). You will definitely want the hiking straps, because you'll mostly be single-trapping (crew only), and you'll want to be able to hike out.

I sail at the same weight as you. Takes a bit more wind to single-trap the crew (10-12 kts), more to double-trap (14-15 kts), but you can DEFINITELY fly a hull. You can actually do OK in light air. The moderate stuff is where you have no chance when racing against lightweights... <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I was kinda worried that flyin one hull at my weight was not going to happen but we will see.. if I can ever get any decent days to go out on the boat before it gets cold!!!

There are two materials that tramps are made of regularly. One is the vinyl like hobie tramps. They are waterproof and water pools on them, also you can't see through them. Also they are the only tramps allowed for hobie regattas.

The Mesh tramps are made of the same stuff that kids trampolines are made of. water can splash through them and you can see through them.

The mesh material is called permatrom or something, made by Ten Cate /Bayer, it is produced in the US somewere.

It is used for kids trampolines and coastal protection [to keep the rocks in place at stone barrier, it is used in the farming industry as well

If you are a DIY-guy try to find the fabric at an industrial supplier[saves you a lot of $$$]

Hobie makes both vinyl and mesh tramps and they are both legal for racing. They are competitively priced and are RF welded, not stitched - a process that can not be duplicated by the do-it-yourself-er.

I don't want to talk smack on the Amish, but as Mbounds said these tramps are sewn not RF Welded, and will last about 1/4 the time that a Hobie tramp will. Also the material is different. If you look closely at one of these after-market tramps the material is woven, whereas the Hobie material is all one piece- like it's been coated. The after-market tramps are priced right though.

Your blue vinyl Hobie tramp is probably from the 80's? That' a pretty good lifespan I'd say. Stick with the factory one.

Solid or mesh styles, but all vinyl and both heat and sonic welded.

as for the factory hobie tramps do they come in colors or just in white?

so I called and checked on the prices of "real" hobie Tramps.. and they are a little pricey 320 and 427 for mesh.. thats a little steep.. and the guy at the shop said that the mesh tramps can make it a little easier to keep flying a hull becasue it lets the wind through...?

I am not sure I want an all white tramp tho.. how are the mesh tramps wiht weight on them? I normally stand on my tramp to raise the mast will the mesh tramp support the load?

Yes....at least my 9 year old factory tramp does.
