Who's your dady on Fridady night?

I'm thinking about making that a Thurdady night to encourage more people down for a Friday fun day!

I will be arriving about noon on Friday if all goes well. I plan to set up and sail then.

I'm going to be two up unless it's really light air.

Hey, here's something we have not discussed, since the boat is rated the same uni or sloop, can we change configuration during the regatta? ie. windy, bring crew and jib one day, then if the next day is light, leave them on the beach?

I think there is kind of a "gentleman's agreement" not to do that unless in the case of injury, divorce or a crew member is otherwise incapacitated. There have been instances that BEFORE a regatta starts, a boat has stated the intention of sailng 2-up on Saturday and dropping to 1-up on Sunday because of a work conflict for the crew. All done well in advance of any accurate weather reports.

I don't think the intention is for all the crews to be on the beaches when the wind lightens up - but I wouldn't complain if it kept you in the regatta instead of not competing for a day.

Of course, this is my opinion only.

According to class rules No you cant.

Tradewinds is a two day event. That said if you sail uni on saturday you must sail uni on sunday.

What about vice-versa, as in, it's blowing on Saturday but light on Sunday, you drop the jib and crew, and so you are not adding a new sail.

In keeping with all the arguments that the boat is -just as fast- solo as sloop, I don't see where it should matter, right?

At some point we are going to have to admit that when it's blowing, having a crew to help keep the boat down and work the spinnaker is faster than going it alone.

Tim if you drop the jib and crew you are changing your sail suit. According to class rules NOT allowed.

This something I will argue. If the F16 is equal both ONE and TWO up according to the class rules, and the PN committee dropped the uni rating because we are complying to our class rules we must comply and follow ALL the rules. None of this "oh I dont mind, sail as you wish"

We must follow each and every rule to the T, not selectively choose which rules we wish to follow.

Either we are all IN F16 or NOT. If we are IN, I say follow the rules. You sail Uni saturday you must sail UNI sunday.

One thing I am good at; which has helped me in my career and im sure same applies to you Tim. We do not interpret rules, we just read them and follow them.

The "what ifs" open too many variables.

Robi, the way I read "A single suit of sails" is, you cannot change one main or spinnaker or jib, for another during an event. It says nothing about dropping the jib alltogether.

Perhaps the wording should be "A single CONFIGURATION will be used...". I'm not trying to bend any rules here, just looking for clarification.

It would limit the flexability of the boat if we are required to race -with crew- and a crew has to leave during a regatta. Since we just completed the "Just as fast Uni as Sloop" debate, I don't see where it should make any difference.

I would agree that one should not be able to switch crews, from a heavy crew on a windy day, to a lighter crew on a light day (but we have no class min. wt.), or switch sails (one main sail for another), during a regatta. But when you drop your crew you also drop the jib, and you take on the added burden of running the spinnaker sets and drops while trying to round the marks, I see little advantage there, especially when the boats are rated equal.

I can see that this might become an issue. It should probably be addressed by the International group.

It seems to me THE Chuck did that once. I don't recall for certain. Ask Matt, he would probably know.

Personally I don't care. Use a dozen different sail/crew combinations if you like.

My reasoning is this: if you're making major changes during a regatta, it's probably from frustration; and any change is only going to make things worse! Think of Matt & Gina. Their performance does not change with the conditions. They are always on top of their game. It is the crews skill level that is important, not their body weight.

I think there is a regatta down in the Bahamas where they carry multiple crew and the crew jump of the boat, into the water, during the race!

Andi, It would be me kicking myself off the boat, I would not do that to you! So for you F-16 Americans, Andi will be flying over to sail with me, and if it's light air, I will be on the committee boat, you will have to deal with him, and he's a lot faster than me!

Now, if I could just lose about 75 lbs, I could stay on the boat... <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> I'm hoping it blows 20.

And I thought The Chuck sold his Blade? What's he sailing at Tradewinds?

Guys, my PERSONAL interpretation of this scenario is that if you enter a regatta as a sloop with crew then the whole of the regatta should be raced that way unless there are exceptional circumstances. e.g illness or injury or pehaps if the intention to switch modes during the regatta was made at the time of entry and permission obtained both from fellow competitors and the PRO.

This situation has arisen in UK events and has been settled before racing began, for example where a crew has been unavailable for the first day of a weekend event.

I guess I agree with Robi!
