Is there any mast up storage for cats in the area? I would be interested in anywhere in between El Segundo and Laguna Beach, but the closer to Huntington Beach the better.

Also, any windsurfing going on in the area?

Matt

Loooong wait lists everywhere I've looked around here. ABYC's wait list is about three years. I'm on the city's wait list, too - I've been number 25 in line for three months.

Matt:

Sorry to say there is no mast up storage outside of a Yacht Club. As John mentioned there is a waiting list at ABYC and you cannot even get on it until you are a member. If you would like to start that process you can contact me. I think that Mission Bay Yacht Club is also full to the brim and I know too far for you to consider.

Most of the sailors in the area store their boats with the masts down and step them to sail...not too bad until you are spoiled with mast up storage.

You could try looking into Cabrillo Beach YC but you will have to be a member there as well. They have a nice yard. I do not know what the waiting list for it is like.

Later,
Dan DeLave

Matt,

I'll chime in here since you mentioned El Segundo which, is only 5 miles of great sailing away from Marina Del Rey, this sailor's home port.

web page

MDR has the only municipal mast up storage in Los Angeles and the only other one fairly close is more than 50 miles to the north in Ventura.

Not only is it the only municipal Mast Up Storage, but it may be the only mast up storage that has space avaiability.

The price is indirectly subsidized by the taxpayer (Thank-Me very much) and the monthly fee includes unlimited use of the public launch ramp and associated parking lot. For reference, the daily launch fee is about eight dollars.

The launch ramp has docks and most people use an automobile and trailer, some catsailors use beach wheels on occasion.

Here is a link to the facility:
google map of the facility

Once here, you will be greeted by Hobiegary who will welcome you to the Santa Monica Bay where there are hundreds of square miles of great sailing.

Thanks for the help.

So there are no cat clubs south of long beach?

I figured this move would end in a sawsall and a dumpster, but I think they will move the boat for free. So, I figured I would check.

Seems like So. Cal would be a good place for a cat to supplement windsurfing on light days. Plus being able to sail out to Catalina would be fun. I am surprised there are not cat clubs like we have up here.

Over the past 3 years, I have logged so many miles on the catamaran that maybe it is time for a change anyway.

Gary,

Thanks for the reply. If I end up living in Huntington Beach, which is still up in the air, how long would it take me to get up to MDR on a weekend? Google maps says 49 min, but I highly doubt that would happen on a weekday.

Thanks,

Matt

50-70 mins would be a fair estimate. If you drove at 7-9 a.m., it would probably be more like 30-35 mins.

Google maps might just be somewhat accurate.

Please don't hesitate to drill me with any questions. I'd hate to see any catsailor to not take advantage of what is available here.

And yes, Catalina Island is a nice place to sail to. There are a few of us who do it regularly.
