If some of you would like to come to Mumbles next year for the Global Challenge but need a bit of extra persuasion then have a look at this website. There is a lot more to do than just sailing. I would recommend that you look at the beaches page and take a tour through the various photos. If the conditions are favorable the day after the G.C has finished for those who are still keen or capable of sailing then we will probably sail from Mumbles to Oxwich for a Pub lunch, as you can see the Coastline is phenomenal.

P.S Don't make any Hotel reservations just yet as I will try and get some discounts at Hotels within easy falling over distance of the Yacht Club.

Deja vu. How much is shipping from the U.S.? Better yet, any chance of renting a boat?

As regards transportation; Gatwick to London via train is easy and affordable. Nothing could be more convenient. I'm assuming Gatwick/Mumbles would be the same. Relatively more walking and confusion at Heathrow.

There is no chance I would drive in England! You folks are almost as crazy as the Germans!

btw- with the current exchange rates, Britain is simply not afforable to many Americans.

I'll be driving down early on Thursday the 8th and MAY be able to give someone a lift down; BUT I'll be passing London early morning with a trailer on the back and so would not want to venture into the airport arrivals (if at all possible). I will have room for one (or maybe 2 at a pinch) plus "flight" baggage as I should be driving the Wife's V70; If I'm driving the Subaru I wont have room.

Maybe a last-resort solution to getting people down to Mumbles if you can find somewhere to stay where I could pick you up around 06:00.....

First, a boat. I'd be much more interested in renting.

This is a long shot, but those of you from the US who are interested in coming to Mumbles next year could try and book the same flight. I could then hire a mini bus and collect all of you from the Airport. Should you then wish to hire a car then this could be done from Swansea (8 miles from Mumbles) It's only an idea!! but could save you some hassle when you arrive. I know Joanna is interested in making the trip. If it's just Pete and his wife then I'm sure I could collect you in my own car from any of the previously named airports but it might cost you a few Beers. Beer is now cheaper than petrol here in the UK

The latest on accommodation isn't as good as I had hoped it would be. As August is the tourist industry's high season around here the Hotels will easily be fully booked up. So in order to gain any discounts of around 10% we would need to make reservations for more than 30 people. This is not impossible but difficult to arrange!!

Start counting...

Kathleen and myself = 2

Are there any vacation houses for rent? Then it's maybe enough to share with 6 or 8.

Kathleen and I already checked some prices and the only economical solution to us seemed to be a type of farm where you can rent a house for 8 (4 bedrooms).
Otherwise we also think about putting up our tent.

I don't think I will be making it. The air fare alone is enough to break the bank. Cheapest I have found is 1200 USD!

Ouch. How much are internal flights? You can do Virgin from NY to LHR for about 800USD.

Is that in August and including taxes?
It will be another $300 for me to get to JFK. The cheapest flight now from Nashville is $799 + $401 in taxes. (which is crazy!) And unfortunately the US doesn't give holiday time like other countries. Or I would come and spend a month to make it worth the cost.

Have a look at Zoom (www.flyzoom.co.uk) to Gatwick. Taxes, and airfares generally, are lower at Gatwick. I get $711 all in for out on the 7th, back on the 14th.

We can help you get over to Mumbles, if you can get to the airport!

Paul

45GBP per night for single with en-suite and sea view! Not the cheapest option, but simple, close to the club, bar that's open late! (not tht the sailing club bar closes early!!!!)

Coming down early on the 7th (hope to be there around 10-12, hopefully pass any smeasuring that is required and then go for a sail, staying the evening of the 12 and then back the following day.

Dunno how many boats we'll get!
