You got a big ol' truck, go into the catamaran transport business. You prolly coulda hauled enough boats down here to pay for your trip (to Tradewinds) and then some.

The tough one is packing the boats. If the trailer weighed 6500lbs that would leave me with about 12,000lbs of room for cargo. or at 500lbs a piece for the boat, (adding some gear) Theoretically I could haul 24 boats. Charge $100 a boat that would work out pretty good on my end. But like I said bulk is the problem not the weight. We got eight into my car trailer with room for at least two, if not three more, but those were mostly H14's, and two H16's which tear down pretty easily. I'd need to get a dedicated trailer like the HCA has. I'm not too excited about disassembleing my FXone either.

There's a trip to S. Padre in the works for February I just hope everything comes together so I can get the hell outta here.

to south florida it is 3700 miles round trip. At full weight I'd get about 7mpg, (maybe less if there's a bad headwind). I'd go through 530 gallons of diesel which the average is about $3.40 a gallon right now. The fuel bill would be $1800! Wow, that would get spendy. Better make it $150 a boat. That would still be cheaper than towing it yourself over that kind of distance even if you drove seperately.

Better make it $250 per boat and factor in the cost of additional insurance for the vehicle and cargo. Then calculate the taxes that that you'll pay to each state you drive through hauling freight. Then you'll need to consider Homeland Security mandated drug testing and background check for the driver, which if you ignore it and get caught is a felony with a nasty fine and jail time, not to mention confiscation of the vehicle and cargo.

My wife and her brothers own a truck line. Overall, being in the transportaiton and logistics business is a nightmare and is only getting worse. And you wonder why a loaf of bread costs almost $4. It's probably better to just find another sailor heading to the same event and split the cost of gas.

You should have seen the Syracuse rig, 6 Hobie 16's stacked on one trailor behind a Land Yacht! I can't even imagine what the gasoline costs but I heard it was in the neighborhood of $1,100 each way...Ouch! But Props to them for making the drive, the Hobie 16 fleet was the largest by far, lots of kids out there doing well too!
