Hello Heinz -

I don't have much info on fleets in your area - how big are you guys? I hoping NAHCA will be able to help with some info on the Hobie Fleets out your way, but it sounds like you may be talking about a statewide mixed fleet. Twenty? A hundred?

Thanks for taking the time -

John

John,
i hope this helps.
Location Connecticut
I Sail and race a Nacra 6.0 with NE chute, Hobie 14 (frostbiting) and DN Iceboat. I race all three more or less competitively. I travel around 20,000 miles per year going to regattas and distance races.

i live on the marsh in port royal, sc and belong to the local sailing club where i keep a h14t and a h16 rigged and ready to go whenever i can get out -which is often. we have a spring and fall racing series, distance race, and three annual regattas. i seldom go out of town to race. i am refurbishing an early h12. i'm getting ready to build my 2d wood kayak. i keep three plastic kayaks, a canoe, a couple of windsurfers, a sunfish, and my 16' battoe style sailing skiff. i also enjoy surfing my antique hansen and rondell longboard surfboards in the summer. yes i use all these boats except the windboards, i am loaning one to a student. life in the lowcountry! :^ )

John,

Lets take this "getting to know you" one more step. How about all responses include a pic of themselves and crew if possible.

I have attached pic of myself and my first mate which is wife (wait I think she is the captain) hehehe.

Ok...my two cents.

I live in Socal, L.A. Area. Own a Prindle 18 that I mostly sail out of Marina Del Rey or Ventura. From time to time, I hit a couple of local lakes. No racing, all just for fun sailing.

I also have access to a fleet of Hobie 16's that I sail/teach on.

John,

I live in Greenville, SC and sail mostly competively all over the U.S. east of the Mississippi (Key Largo to Sandusky, OH). I sail about 12-16 regattas a year where I now race a Nacra 6.0NA (soon to be the New England chute configuration following ratification of the proposed class modifications). I also own a Nacra 5.2 and I keep a Hobie 18 on Folly Beach, SC for recreational sailing.

I would be glad to help you set up a database form on a website that people could log in this information to be systematically recorded. I should own a website capable of hosting that form in about two or three months.

Hello,
I'm from Fort Loramie, Ohio and sail mainly on Grand Lake St. Marys. We sailed once on Western Lake Erie last summer and hope to get up there more next year. This winter we'll be pulling our Prindle 18 down to Key Largo for a week. My wife and I are fairly new to the sport. I owned a Hobie 16 for one season, sold it and bought our Prindle 18, which we've sailed for one season. Also own two kayaks, a canoe and a camper. We also like to go backpacking out West (Grand Canyon, California, Utah, etc.) The main problem is that we don't have enough time to do everything.

I live in Camrose, Alberta, Canada. There are 2 fleets of Catamarans that are close to my place (within 60 miles) that I can sail at often, one of about 30 catamarans that include the largest group of 18 squares in North America, and our club near Edmonton that has about 40 various Cats that have perhaps 10 move more than a couple times a year. (For those wondering, we have been snow skiing for a few weeks now) I have an A-Class that I built that needs several revisions. I am preparing to post sometime on all the things I learned to not do when building a boat! I started sailing 4 summers ago on a Tornado that I sold in error with the intent of purchasing a used Marstom, but that fell through when I added up all the costs. I hope to get to some A-Class regattas this year in the Great Lakes area, and see if I can get this thing to go faster! I would love to go to the regattas at Ricks place, but it is about 4 days of driving 20 hours per day to get to, and my boat is being revised... Maybe next year.

I live in Falher, Alberta, Canada (~300 miles Northwest of Camrose), sail a Tornado at Seba Beach (Lake Wabamun). We haven't done any racing since there isn't any at our end of the lake (and we still can't tack worth a darn). The grumpy face is due to the fact that the lakes are frozen and we don't have any snow yet to go skiing.
Conrad, where do you sail? I doubt whether I'll find the time and energy to trailer the boat, but you never know. The "10 cats moving off the beach" sounds like Wabamun sail club.
Later,
Al

John-
Live in Little Rock, Arkansas and sail my old "woodie" A-cat US #48 recreationally and race my Taipan 4.9 (sometimes as F 16HP) anywhere I can get to when time allows. I also own a Hobie 14t, Prindle 15, Prindle 18 and Laser. We have about 5 active racing Hobie 16 sailors at our local lake (Lake Maumelle) and two new "A" cats (plus lots of rarely sailed Hobies and Prindles!).

Regards,
Kirt

Don Caldwell here from Cedar Creek, Tx just southeast of Austin and I race my Supercat-20 and sometimes, my Nacra 18 square all over Texas and some in Louisiana. We sail for fun at Lake Travis or Padre Island when were not racing. I started sailing 22years ago(seems like only yesterday) on a 17' Texas trimaran built by Piver and have been a multihull advocate ever since.

Yes, John that's what we have here, a statewide mixed fleet. We have about 50 active members and at our three annual races, including a distance race of about 25 to 30 miles, we have about 25 or 30 boats show up. When you say a mixed fleet, I don't think it can get any more mixed! We sail, Prindles, Nacra's, Hobies, Inter's, G-Cats, P-cats, Supercats, Mysteres, Trac's, throw in an occasional Tornado and Solcat, oh and even a lonely Venture cat!
We have lots of social sailing events also and last year we tried to combine some themes with these events with great success. Our state championship races are shared with the two local Hobie fleets on the same days and are held in Mexico, a great sailing venue.
All this in a state not known for it's abundance of water!
Hope this helps!

Hello mwr,

I grew up in Half Moon Bay and used to sail our family's Hobie 18 (#135, I think it was) there, both in the harbor and out in the ocean. Now I'm in Fresno--some nice lake sailing here also, especially Huntington Lake. I try to sail weekly when it's a little warmer. I've got full wetsuits, though. If you know you're gonna be sailing some Saturday, send me a private message where and when. Perhaps we can see some life in the Nor Cal and Central Cal scene.

Hello, I own two H16's both with Trapseats, and a H14, and three Access Dinghies. I also teach sailing at the local college, and am the commodore of our new Hobie Fleet (just mailed the application). Our club is called Sailability Kootenai / Spokane (http://www.sail-s.com/main/sail/Sailing_Group/Sailing_Group_MAIN.htm) and this is our first year as a club. Our club members are located in North Idaho and Eastern Washington. We sail on a 600-acre lake (Hauser Lake) where our club is located. Lake Pend Oreille (50 miles long and average depth of 1200 ft - with nuclear sub base) and Lake Coeur d' Alene (30 miles long and average depth of 180 ft), and 20 other sailable lakes are close by (we have more water than we know what to do with). Our club is mostly H16's (8 total so far) with one TheMightyHobie18, two H14's, and 1 Wave. Two club members have ordered Hobie Bravo's. I started sailing a H14 as a kid and them moved to a H16 that my father owned. I was given a Prindle 18 in my early 20's and sold it to move up to and get my first H16. My father has sailed a Pacific Cat for as long as I can remember and still has it, which I also learned to sail. Paul Allen's signature is on the PCat's hull. Hope this info is useful.

Heinz,

You mentioned that Arizona is not known for its abundance of water, yet when I was out there a couple months ago someone told me that Phoenix has more boats per capita than anywhere else in the US. Is that for real?

and when i lived there for 4 fears, it seemed like all of the boat owners would hook up thier trailers on the weekend and drive around town for the day. the drive to any lake from chandler was about an hour, and there were really not any beaches at the lakes. definately not like florida.

I live in Bradenton, FL and sail recreationally only on the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay. I own a 1984 G-Cat 5.7M and am looking at getting a Micro-Multihull class catamaran.
