I live in Santa Fe, New Mexico (US). Yes, the United States. You would not believe how many people think New Mexico is a foreign country. I belong to Fleet 48 consisting of a variety of hobies. About 20 or so I guess. The fleet sails Elephant Butte, Storrie, and Heron Lakes. I have never seen a post on this forum from any of them. We have had a severe drought over the last few years and all the lakes are extremely low We are all praying for a lot of snow while we weather the winter wait.

Greg,
When I was in the Air Force in the mid-70's, I was shocked at how few people could place Vermont on the map. There were even those who didn't even recognize it as a state.

Think snow

I live in Memphis, TN, which is about as landlocked a place as you are likely to find. (can't sail too well on the Mississippi river) I'm a member of the local Hobie Fleet 134 and Delta Sailing Association. We sail locally at Arkabutla Lake in Mississippi, about 30 miles south of Memphis. Fleet 134 is the multihull member fleet of DSA, which also has fleets of Lightnings and Thistles. Fleet 134's annual regatta is the Broken Mast Regatta, it's usually well attended with 35 to 45 boats on the line. I believe the date for 2003 will be May 31 - June 1. We always have great food and t-shirts, here's some of the past years t's. Broken Mast Regatta T-Shirts

Our members travel to regattas within about a 500 mile radius, which covers a lot of the country from Memphis. That cuts down on the amount of boats we can put together for weekly local racing.

My name is Curt Rodgers. I live in San Ramon, CA and do moust of my sailing on San Francisco Bay. I have a beautiful 1981 H16 and just got back into sailing catamarans after sailing a Tornado in the early 80's. I plan on racing out of Santa Cruz where there seems to be a pretty active fleet. Wish there was more activity on the Bay!!

I live in Westland, MI and just got into Racing this past year. I have done a lot of recreational sailing in the past and I sail a '73 Hobie 16.

Hi John,

I am another skip, which will also not help your survey but here it goes.

Sail a current Spinnaker rigged Tornado in Sydney Australia and travel up and down the east coast of OZ chasing regattas. Plan to go to Cadiz, Spain next year for the worlds and hopfully link it up with a fewmore regattas in Europe.

Our club in Sydney is the Kurnell Catamaran Club and we get about 25 boats every week with many current and past State, National, World and Olympic Champions.

Some include John Forbes (5 time World Tornado Champ + Bronze & Silver Olympic Medalist), Steve Brewin (A Class - 2001 World champ + 2002 3rd), Scott Anderson (Tornado + A Class and Olympian) and many more.

Check out the club site at www.kcc@asn.com.au

Even more impressed that 1200+ of us are actually passionate enough about it to join a forum. We could have one heck of a regatta if we could decide on a location!
(How about my house at Lake Murray for July 4th. I'm sure we can get Sam Evans and Jake Kohl to bring the beer.)

Cary,

The "Mighty Muddy" at Memphis is indeed both mighty and muddy. The river is extremely dangerous here, high speed currents with hidden sandbars and eddies, underwater man-made jetties, huge objects like trees, barges, houses, and lost containers floating down river. I wouldn't venture onto "old man river" with less than two big engines, radar, and an experienced river pilot.

Farther north, like St. Louis and above, the Mississippi river can be used for recreation, by Memphis, it's a raging beast. If you visit Memphis, don't be tempted to wade in the shallows along the river park downtown. Every year someone (sometimes a whole family) is lost this way.
