Congrats to John at 3 piers race; my calc correct.

I just race read the report :Quote :

Sailing a Stealth R, John P, Sue D made all the right bets to take his second win in the four race series. This race is now a well-established event run to raise money for the Ciaran Trust.

The Met promised force 1 to 3 blowing from the SW or NW, so competitors with a choice of configurations chose the larger rigs and flew kites wherever possible for the 60-kilometre race from Osea Pier in the Blackwater River to Walton Pier and back.

As the fleet tacked together back up the middle of the Blackwater with the growing tide it was near to impossible for the 20 foot Hurricane's and F 20 to shake off the shorter F 18 class. The mere 16 foot Spitfires performed spectacularly to take three of the top seven slots on handicap, while Alan Grace managed 11th place despite his handicaps.

However when the results were counted on corrected time the overall winner was John Pierce, 0.8% ahead of Marconi's Tim Wallace in a standard Hurricane and 2.6% ahead of Dutch F 18 ace, Rico Capelle. Line Honours, Rob White was ultimately fourth, 3.9% behind. The final deciding event of the inaugural UKCRA series takes place at Whitstable on Saturday 22nd September, with John Pierce in the lead after three events.

End quote

Ofcourse winner on handicap but a 2,6 % is alot and would put the Stealth coming in about the same time as the F18 right ? I'm sure John and Sue are exelent sailors but doesn't this slightly suggest that wetted surface to power ratio between the two classes is about the same ?

John please correct me when I'm wrong.

Till that time I see this as good news and a reason to continue more determently.
John,

What are your views on the spitfire, a quick texel scan showed this boat to have a rating of 104,29 compared to 102,62 of F18; difference of 1,67. ISAF rating (because spitfire spi is bigger, had to gues boards though) 1,02948 to 1,00907 of F18 ; difference of 0,0204.

How do the English ratings of both boats (and Stealth)compare to eachother ?

Spitfire specs fot the interested :

length 5m
beam 2.52m
mast ht. 8.5m
battened main 15.5 sq m
battened jib 4.5sq.m
as. sp. 18 sq.m
on the water weight 139 kg

Reason for asking this is that I'm looking at the

Mystere F16 (official manufacturer name) and
Spitfire

to become part of the " 18ft. equal performance class" . you know the one that is being talked about in our intro to F16 HP class. I have to organise a race somewhere in the future and that will probably be an 18ft. EPC racce in order to get some boats. getting these two 16 footers in would be nice.

England used ISAF rating and

Rating Spitfire = 1,04
Stealth R = 1,02

Stealth R with expert crew beated the Spitfire (crew ?)outright and enough to keep ahead in the corrected standings.

More impressive is the fact that
Stealth R handicap is only 0,01 point (1 %) lower than the F18 and the corrected time difference was 2,6 % !!!

This indicates to me that Stealth R has beated the F18's outright too. How heavy was your boat John ? 109 according to ISAF but 117 to Texel. 109 kg would put wetted surface to power ratio around that of the F18. Were you using the 21 sq.mtr. spi or the 17sq.mtr. one ?

If you look in the yachts and yachtinf web page you can get the elapsed time for the Piers race the top boat in each class was as follows:-
stealth 6-46-06
hurrican 6-45-30
f18 mystere 6-52-30
storm big 6-12=12
spitfire 7-13 -19
tornado sport 6-38-42
inter 187-08-51
inter206-24-32
f20 6-45-28
nacra 6.0 7=07-15
dart hawk 7-20-47

There are others but the interesting one is the time of the Stealth behind the Tornado of Will Sunnocks of only 8 minutes in 6 3/4 hours

hope you find these figures interesting

I'm lookinh for real life data to support my wetted surface calculations for it looks like the F16HP will have an almost unbeatable wetted surface area=light air preformance of all the beachcatamarans except A-cat and M18. F16HP also has less wetted surface area than M20 !

Now if the rig is not to small it will beat all bigger boats in light air. Stealth and Taipans in both EU and Aus seem to proof this.

BTW; rig is rather small becuase of F18 equality. A F16HP full out will be in the neighbourhood of Tornado and iF20

But we're going to have a discussion about the F16HP all-out later.
