Will be going to Paris Boatshow within 15 hours, yes, I know last minute decision. But does anybody of you have any special request ?

-1- Eric Poulsen wants to know the price of the Ventilo Zipo.
-2- I'm sure Kirt and Phill want more detailed pictures of that hull shape. Will try to be service in this respect.
-3- I hear the mattia F18 has a completely redesigned hullshape. Will try to get some pictures of that also.
-4- Any more requests ?

First the info :

ventilo and Mattia have been working together on a new semi planing hullshape. Both companies have launched a 16 footer design that look to be compliant with Formula 16 rules.

The Ventilo differs from the mattia design in that it has a circular selftacking rail while the mattia features a straight rail and the ventilo comes with T-foil rudders. Ventilo has as an option an (unstayed) carbon mast. Between you and me and in general terms, the ventilo zipo is the true race version of the Mattia dynacat 16. Neither one has a boom standard, but ventilo's mainsail has got a rail on the mainsail clew and the Mattia has a plate with holes. In one of the pictures the ventilo is depicted with a boom so that may be optional.

Basically the platform of both boats is identical with the exception of the rudders and boards. The Ventilo has asymmetric daggerboards. Both plaforms have identical hulls that are designed to be semi planing and feature a trip turbulator groove right behind the daggerboard. The undersides of the boats are extremely flat and the feature chines of about 80 (outside hull) and 110 (inside hull) degrees.

The ventilo was in a very dark and cramped corner of the boatshow so my pictures of that boat pretty mych failed. I will therefor give you the pictures of the Mattia dynacat 16 instead.

I also had a long talk with the guys at the ventilo stand and they explained that the boat was not a Formula 16 HT but rather a Formula 16 HP. Says enough to me.

Now, as always the specs differ from poster to brochure to the same platform of the other builder. So I haven't been able to confirm its specs beyond a doubt but I will be in contact again and ask for the official confirmation than. For now it looks like the designs are compliant.

By the way I really like the colour scheme of the Ventilo sails. Looks really neat.

In short; we maybe looking at 2 new builders with compliant F16 designs : Ventilo and Mattia.

Extra info ; BCM Cirrus Energy (4,88 mtr and grandfathered) was indeed the best looking boat in the 16 foot range. That company really makes nice boats. Well fitted out, only one thing I didn't like and top quality through out.

Hobie launches more tupperware stuff and I didn't spend much more time on that stand. The FX-one remained the same although it now has larger wings, but I expected that to happen when judging the boat from my own experience.

Have to get back to worl now, may tell you all more later. Have fun looking at the pictures.

As said this hull is supposed to be semi-planing and features a trip turbulator right behind the daggerboard.

Both in front and to the rear of the daggerboard the hull is extremely flat. The whole underside of the hull is very flat almost square like.

A very nice looking cat I must add; well thought out. Very racy when standard and can be maxed out with optional selftacker and snuffer. Would be perfect as an F16 if it lost a little bit of weight and had a tad more sailarea. Is currently grandfathered into the Formula 16 class.

Type = Skunk system. = carbon or Glassfibre mothpiece with bag mid pole

Build = I think homebuild by Mattia but I didn't check the make. However Mattia is not the company to source these kinds of things from others.

Hope this answers your question

Wouter-
Thanks greatly for the pics!! By the way- What is the last picture of? Looks like a fiddle block on a tramp- Is it the spi halyard/snuffer arrangement on one of the boats? If so, where on the tramp is this block located?

Thanks again!

I currently quickly updating our F16 website with these pictures and a few more. A few.

The picture you talk about it the block that set and retrieves the gennaker on the ventilo Zipo. It is fitted right in the middle of the trampoline and looks like a good setup for singlehanding. Especially when snuffing. the sailor only needs to reach out to the line and go right back to the luff hull and do his work from there. The setup also looks simple enough to be able to retrofit it to any existing design.

Hi Wouter,

You said and I quote:
"Ventilo has as an option an (unstayed) carbon mast. "

Now that is interesting, Could you give me more information about this.
Question: How does it attach to the boat. My guess is that it would go trought the front beam and down to the V-bar.

Is it rotating

How will be the deflection of such a rig under load.

Can you have an idea of the size of the section, the modulus of the material

Is is the new 550 Carbon fiber that failed on most multihull on Route du Rhum.

Anyways, as you can see I am very interested with this technological advancement and i will be monitoring the ventilo web site at
http://www.ventilo.ch/ (it is in French)

Have a nice day

Ohh, my mistake Charles. I translated something from Dutch to literally. When we speak of an unstayed here it means that is doesn't have diamond stays and no spreaders. when we say unstayed platform it means what you concluded. I forgot that it doesn't work that way in english.

So the mast is stayed but it doesn't have diamond wires. And it similar to other cat masts like rotating etc.

I don't know the material specs. Sorry.

And as a last remark

"And you know that for the quickest and best coverage of Technological advancements you need to keep an eye on the Formula 16 class and Formula 16 class forum !! "

Hell I went all the way to Paris to get you all the first pictures of that new hul shape. And on what type of boat is it featured first ?

Okay I had my fun. Sorry to have caused the misunderstanding

I am a bit disappointed about the unstayed mast think but it leaves the door open for somebody else to release this major invention.

Maybe one day, you might see somebody asking for the F16HP status for a small cat with an unstayed mast. I have learned some very interesting thinks about new rig technology from the Australian Moth group and one English naval architect and I believe that the unstayed rig might appear some time in the futur

Talking about the F16HP, I will be changing my current boat and moving closer to the F16HP. I have the intention of replacing my current Nacra 5.7 by a much smaller but hopefully equally fun to sail Nacra 5.2. I know that it doesn't meet the F16HP requirement but it is moving closer...

One of the reasonthat I will be changing my boat is that many of the boats that are linking to the F16HP are really promoting themself as one or two person boat and I will be sailing the Nacra solo and uni most of the time.

Anyways, it looks like your had a good time at the Paris boat show
