Having trouble going down wind. In my last to races it has been in real light breeze, I have been racing against mostly 14's [ mari's , paper tigers and windrushes ]. Been going realy good in the up wind starts then getting swamped down wind big time [ in bigger winds 15kn and up i'am fine]. In the light breaze the 14's just run square down wind, if I try and follow them I just stall or worst gybe unintentionally. If I try and tack down wind I just loose more time. Should a Mozzie be quicker then the 14's down wind in light breeze??? or am i just expecting to much.

Karl,

Sounds like you are often sailing by the lee if you are gybing unintentionally. This would definitely make you slower. Try to just go a few degrees higher so you get the maximum wind over the entire sail. I assume that you have wind tell-tails on the side stays to show you the true wind direction.

Yes you should be faster than the Hobie 14's since the Mozzie has more sail area and the yacht/skipper weight combination should be less.

Regards,

Peter

Hey Ben might be up watching the bullets.
Me and my crew need morre time b4 the brass monkey so wont be racing.
Hey Karl dont forget you are probably a bigger guy than the ones on the 14's which gives you the advantage in big days.
All it is, is just time on the water preferably with another mossie.
Will

Thankyou for all the advise.
I might try some tell tales on my side stays as i am currently only using them on my fore stays, and I'll back my rig tension off a little, because I think this may have been to tight and there for stopping my mast from rotating.
I can't make it down to Palm Beach this week end because it is our last club race for the season but I'am hoping to get down that way soon. Maybe the Brass Monkey [when is that on and whoes going] Hay Will are you racing the Mozzie with a crew at the Brass monkey or are you on a mono.

Hey Karl,
If I can get rid of my boat Ill be down there on a slooped mossie, If not Ill be on one of three boats, 12ft skiff, mg or a 18ft skiff. going for a squirt on the harbour in 2 w/e time on the 18 so its take a pick so far.
Been doing alot of training on a carbon fibre 12ft skiff. The boat is that light when rigged 2 ppl can pick it up and its got a bigger sail area the an A class.
We cartwheeled it in front of lady macquarries chair when the red bull event was on. Made for so good pre event entertainment
