First of all let me say im sorry if my terminology is wrong, but i will try to explain myself as thoroughly as possible so that it can be understood what im trying to explain. The Rear and Front metal crossbar that is held onto the hull with two straps on each side and square washers is having some problems. The washers on certain points are coming through the hull. The boat is a 1982 5.8 and the hull seems to be strong everywhere else. There have already been local repairs done before from what i can tell (they were bad though) and the problem is resurfacing.

I would like to avoid re-glassing the whole part because it would be above and beyond my means right now but any other suggestions are more than welcome!

you have to glass it.

It's really not that bad a job for you to do yourself....

was there ever an alternative to the square washer, at least inside the hull, like a bar that would connect both bolts, to distribute the stress on the hull?

Sorry man, but there is no way around it.You have to bite the bullet and repair the whole area. Or you will suffer a catastrophic failure soon...

I have to agree. There is no other sensible solution than redoing the beam mounts. It really isn't that bad a job and can easily be done over a weekend especially if you can work undercover.
While doing it you can always replace the backing plates with larger ones to spread the load.........

There is a simple solution and I have done it twice and the boats are still sailing with no failures. I installed 2, 5 inch ports a few inches behind the front crossbar and then used the same hole saw and cut a hole in the bulkhead to allow me access to the bolts in front of the crossbar. I then removed the bolts and drilled all the way through. I then put in new bolts that were long enough to go all the way through with enough length for a nylon locking nut and washer. I actually used the square washers (I had extras) that are used to help hold the ss strap down. I also cleaned up the area and used Marine Tex before I tightened everything. I also installed beam inserts to strengthen the front crossbar, if you have a NA they will already be there. The first boat that I repaired 8 years ago is still sailing in the Atlantic Ocean with no problems.

Not necessarily. Most of the 5.8's that still exist today were sold as non NA rigs, and most 5.8NA's in existence were NA upgrade kits. The 6.0NA in their robust years starting putting in the reinforcements in the front beams. It's easy to know if you have them, pop off the end cap and look inside.

He described the boat as a 1982 which I believe is a glass lay up not a foam sandwich boat so I seriously doubt if it is an NA boat, I am not sure when they started making the 5.8 as a NA
