The Great Texas Catamaran Race, a 300 mile race along the Texas coast over Memorial day weekend sponsored by PI Sailing, is off to a great start with most of the top long distance sailing teams in Texas already registered. Two weeks after announcing the event, nine teams have registered.
Every registered sailing team has at least one member who has participated in the Worrell 1000 as either skipper, crew or road crew. (Five of the nine skippers have skippered at the Worrell.) In addition, this group includes nearly everyone who has earned a trophy in the spinnaker class at Ruff Riders over the past few years.
The field is led by Team San Antonio, with John Tomko on the helm. John is the current Hobie 20 National Champion and a top 5 finisher in the Worrell 1000 this past year. John may be the favorite to win at home in his backyard, but he will be pushed by other distance sailors who have jumped at the chance to sail the Texas coast.
Billy Richnow has agreed to serve as PRO for the race. Billy is well recognized as one of the best PRO’s in the country having served as PRO at national events such as Performance Nationals and Mid-Americas. In addition, Billy serves on the race committee organization at the Houston Yacht Club and is involved in training future race committee members. Long time assistant, Betty Reeh, will back up Billy.
We will continue to acceptance registrants for the race. Pisailing.com will have an updated list of registrants.
