Like the subject says. What would be a good length for home made tell tales? I plan on making a few with vinyl and VHS tape.

What would be a good length?

If anyone is interested let me know via PM.

We use VHF tape, about 18 inches long on the front bridle on the H-17's and Waves. Works well, and the price is right. Put on new each day.

I meant for the sails. Specifically leach tell tales.

Make them 15 feet long, then sail in the 4th of July boat parade! Wouldn't that be COOL?

Hi Robi,

That one I use are about half a foot. Don't know if this are the best, but I can clearly see, if the flow stalls.

Cheers,

Klaus

i always have strands of cassette tape on my spin bridal wires... they last about a month before all the color works off and they are then clear and worthless... so i would probably not suggest vhs tape (assuming it is similar material to old cassette tape) on your main as you will need to change it out often.

Not sure about vinyl but i would recommend nylon (spin material) as this will last for years. I recently had work done on my light air mains and JSI put real thick (wide) tell-tales on the sail. They are very loud (relatively) but i love them.

I will guess they are 8" long and 1.5 wide

PS Don't foget Rick claims that somehow ABBA 8track is the fastest tape out there!..

I bought mine from West Marine. They are light weight come with stick pads not that expensive and last a long time. Easy to see red - green.

Why buy when you can build? Specially coming from you, im disappointed. LOL j/k

Yeah the vinyl part will be the sticky part and the tell tales will be used on the leach of the main. Replacing them every month wont be a problem.

I remembered this thread while sailing this weekend.. and i think the length is more like 12" (both mid sail and leach tell tails).

I have put leach tails on before and they had 2 triangle shaped stickies so you could get the tell-tail right at the leach... and stick it to both sides of the sail.

PS ... I PERSONALLY wouldn't want to have to change my tell-tails often, nor would i want to be putting sticky tape on, and ripping it off my mylar with any frequesncy...

Kind of funny me buying tell-tails but building a boat. I've made them in the past with cassette tape from a buffett tape can't remember what song....once the song wore off I did not like the hissing noise. Then you have the question about class legal.
