The IOC Executive meets this week. Cross your fingers, rub your rabbit's foot, hold your breath, do a little dance, and pray. Sailing may have an 11th medal in the 2012 Olympic Games when we wake up on Saturday morning. How nice it would be for the sport and for Weymouth. cool

Kneel down, bust yer head on the floof, smoke a spliff, and pray to God, Bob Marley and Allah that the IOC can recognize that cats are great equipment for sailing.

In the mean time the Dutch committee will work to get cannabis off the dope list; in Honor of Bob Marley of course!

Where can we read the outcome of this meeting?
Or do we have someone present there?

We don't have anyone on the IOC Executive Committee, but I am quite certain that we will hear what happens if a decision is made. There's no guarantee that a decision will be made this week, but it has been rumoured for several months now that this is the meeting where it will be taken up. I'll certainly pass along anything I hear, but I expect it will be a Euro or an Aussie that gets the word first.

Suppose IOC say 'lets have an 11th sailing medal'- what then?
Might they decide they want a ladies skiff or a multihull, or something else? or does it go back to ISAF to decide?

The ISAF Executive was given the authority to make a decision on the event and equipment for the 11th medal immediately upon notification by IOC. ISAF has agreed to designate the event as being Open Multihull and the equipment as being the Tornado. The authority was granted in order to eliminate the need to wait until the ISAF meeting in Korea this November to make a decision and announcement. For those of us in the US, it should be noted that US SAILING was fully supportive of this approach.

There is an economic slow down. If the IOC was a normal corporation looking after their own interests, I bet they would further reduce the number of events.

However, they are not a normal corporation and are highly sensitive to worldwide politics. There might be a lot of political pressure to increase the number of events to make sure people don't get the idea that economic reactivation policies and efforts are not working. That is the scenary I hope for.

In short, it is bad for governments/politicians to have lesser games due to the slowdown. Since wealth (food) is perceived as scarce, entertainment must be perceived as abundant ("panem et circensis").

Good luck to all!

Very true andinsightful Luiz, look at the lengths some emerging countries go to to host the Games for the reasons you present as well as national pride and exposure.

I'm sorry folks. We're done. No cats in 2012.

JW,
Thanks for your work on this and keeping us in the loop and updated.
Maybe they'll see the light eventually and dump one of the keelboat classes and put multihull back in ,in a future games.
Sucks for now, though.

And the ISAF president looks like he will get an IOC position as reward for his work. What a massive fuckup by ISAF in so many ways.

well, we've tried "working with the system"

Is there an avenue that we can explore outside the establishment or will that lead to equal amounts of head-wall-banging?

I'm wondering how this affects the law. If the ISAF excludes us from Olympic competition, can they still claim to represent catamaran sailing? Wouldn't we now be able to hold a "World Championship" without risking censure?
