Been painting the F32 hull with 2 part epoxy paint [Awlgrip]

The tins of paint seem very heavy compared to domestic oil based paints. You start to add it all up in your head and there seems to be a fair weight of paint on the boat.

As far as high build and ordinary primer goes, I seem to have sanded off most of what I have sprayed on. But the three coats of top coat are a different story....

When it cures, it flashes off the reducer used in spraying, but does any of the actual component in the paint evaporate?
For every KG of paint from the tin - does the boat get 1 KG heavier?

Going down the shed to wet and dry some more weight off now, its starting to look sexy by the way!

You are correct to be concerned, paint is heavy. If the paint is a new type VOC compliant paint, it's mostly solids(a lot of it is metal and metalic oxides). There should a couple of lines on the can or the website that tell you what percentage that goes into the air. (look for the one that gives the percentage by weight)

The only numbers that I know for weight of paint are:

F14 - 2 coats white IMRON ~1.5 Kg

Factory repaint Marstrom Tornado ~6 lbs.

Now if you want to look really cool and save some weight, I saw a really odd tool last summer at a show. It was a paint roller that would make your car look just like carbon fiber. Roll on the carbon fiber with thin coat of black paint, cover it with a UV resistant clear coat, and you are ready to go.
(for those who are challenged, this is a joke. I think your boat would look better if you let a 1st grader finger paint it)

Awesome! That is a project I am considering plotting in on the long term masterplan. Do you run a blog or a website about your project?

Are you sure the topcoat is epoxy?

Do you have or can get hold of a reasonably accurate electronic balance? If so why not take a sample (say 10/20gram) when mixed and see what it weighs when cured.
Just remember to take the tare weight of the container beforehand.

No - too busy building a boat! I take pictures to keep a sort of log of progress

I two-packed the 5.9 with polygloss last month. Picked up the wrong hardener when doing the second hull - what a mess. At about £50/lt I know what it's like!
