Unregistered | But there IS bass fishing, right? Is all seriousness, I have heard Daytona is THE place to do the catamaran racing thing.

Posts: 921 Alachua, FL | Daytona is one of my favorite regattas, but the surf can be an issue. Back in the day (Hobie Day) we almost always sailed in the surf. Jax, Daytona, Jetty Park (Cocoa Beach), Melbourne, 'Lauderdale, Miami Beach, et al. Now everyone but the Tybee Guys are afraid of the surf. We have lost most of the good access points anyway, so it is a lot harder to even get to the surf.

Posts: 921 Alachua, FL | You were born 35 years too late Tad! We never even thought of sailing in a lake until they opened Mouse Town and that really really sucked.

Posts: 606 Maryland | Hang on there. No absolutes. I'll push my F16 through the surf single handedly even on a day when a Hobie 16 got flipped and broke a mast. One of my favorite venues was a September event in Virginia Beach. Nothing like racing up and down the beach during a beach festival. I hope they bring it back after this year's apathetic attempt.
I think it is an issue that surf is unforgiving and if you do not execute well the results can be painful and expensive (another kind of pain).

Unregistered | I actually drove along the Eastern shore of Lake Okeechobee today on the way to the Steeplechase and it looks like it would be a great place to sail. Nice wind, miles of flat water, and no viable place to launch or stay. I have never sailed there (or done anything besided drive by the town/lake) but they do have camping, lodging, and a marina at Lake Okeechobee Outpost. there is boating / sailing / etc there.. PS i am not advocating it (not a fan of sailing with gators), i was simply answering the question.. "where is fresh water in SF" http://lakeokeechobeeoutpost.com/marina.htm | | | Re: Potential New Regatta in March (South FL)

Posts: 176 Palm Beach Gardens. FL | The locals call the gators in Lake Okeechobee monsters for a reason. Used to be great regattas on Lake Mangonia in West Palm, it was hard to even find a spot to setup. I'd rather take my chances with sharks! | | | Re: Potential New Regatta in March (South FL)

Oh yeah...I forgot about Mangonia. It was like DW without the rides.

Posts: 5,590 Naples, FL | Lake Trafford. Look it up. Ski Oleski can be PRO - he knows nothing about sailing, but can beat off all the gators with his airboat operation. Florida Cracker if I ever met one, and a pretty stand up guy notwithstanding!
There are a ton of freshwater lakes in lake Placid, but is that considered "south Florida"?
If the person is thinking about SW FL, I'd be happy to assist, and PGP would probably be interested too.
