Some nice photos now appearing on the hobieworlds.com and Hobie Factory blog sites. We are getting some on-the-water stuff from the local organizers. These two from New Caledonia... yeah, it's like this at the event.

Three races today. Two in 12-15 kts... One in 25 kts this afternoon. Straight on-shore again, so launching was...interesting.

Hey Matt,
Any Idea about how many spots there are for the next round?

They have not said, but I'm guessing plenty.

Seems really odd that wouldn't be decided in advance and placed into the NOR or SIs, of course I can't find either of those docs online. Were they really unsure of how many competitors they would get?

It's hard to fathom that wouldn't be decided at least before the boats hit the water to start the on-site qualifying, I must be missing something?

People drop out at the last minute - or just never show up to registration.

It's always been a shifting number, back to the days of provided boat Nationals.

In fact, the event / rotation formal is virtually identical to the way provided boat Nationals were done.

They even named "alternate qualifiers" at the first cut party in case someone dropped out for whatever reason.

Also, if they have a "reduction in boats" (rare, but it does happen), they can adjust the number of qualifiers.

Usually they put a minimum number of qualifiers in the NOR. It's just math.

Yeah, I knew it was fuzzy based on entries. And we all know that if you are at the bottom of the pile, you get chucked if boats start to become unsailable. Alternates totally make sense as well.

I am still surprised it would be THAT much of an unknown going into the qualifier (actually, by the morning of Day 1 of qualifying, this should be totally clear, barring boat breakage).

You've been hanging out with those New England judges too much. Lighten up, Francis.

We never knew who was going to make the first cut - they'd announce the results at the party, starting with first place and working down. The suspense was impressive.

Only when they got to the actual last person qualified would they say, "And the last team to qualify for the round-robin is . . . "

I said "They have not said"... not that they do not know. I am not in the inner circle on that one... plus what Bounds said, They like to make it have some suspense.

Rain and no wind today. Wet.

Hi Matt,
thanks for all the updates. Why is it that there is no little official news and no updated pics?
Enjoy.

News, photos, instant results (before they hit the beach) are all appearing on hobieworlds.com

The local event site is not being updated by the local guys, so we and the IHCA are doing it on our own.

Final day... not looking like much wind at the moment, but it's early. Jerome LeGal is looking good to win.

Fixed it for you...

Actually, you're right. I've spent more time doing high-level non-Hobie events (than Hobie events) over the past few years. While these guys wouldn't get it, I do understand your logic (know your event), and it sounds like fun!

Hey Matt,

Outstanding job with this, as always. FWIW, whenever I mention things like live mark roundings on the web, supplied-boat worlds, etc. to other major sailing organizations, they tell me it can't be done...

BTW, is that DSQ correct for Jerome? What was that about?

Mike

Could easily have been a rule 69 issue I heard.

Port starboard downwind with Rod Waterhouse. Rod hailed a foul... then protested when Jerome refused to 360 I take it. Jerome used a "witness" in the hearing that was later determined to be false... no where near the incident. The re-opened protest ended with a DSQ for Jerome. Could have cost him the championship. He still was pissy about the whole thing and nearly caused a riot at the award dinner.

Yikes, sorry I asked. Should have been a 69 (certainly Rule 2). I didn't know that stuff was still going on (the "witness" thing I've heard from prior worlds).

Why do the trophies look like Emmy awards? wink

Thanks again for all the great coeverage!

Mike
