It's a New Bay Week! I-LYA 110th Regatta, Put-in-Bay, Ohio, August 4, 5, & 6, 2003

Bay Week is one of the largest fresh-water events in the United States with boats hailing from all over the Great Lakes and Canada. There will be separate courses for One-Design Centerboards and Catamarans, One-Design Keelboats, and another course for PHRF, Multihulls and Corsair Trimarans. There will be trophies for any class of five or more boats. Each class will be governed by it's respective One-Design Class Rules. Download official Notice of Race here: http://i-lya.com/Sail/nor/deep1.pdf

The Hobie Waves are Coming! The Hobie Wave North American Championships!!!!
This will be the third year for the Hobie Waves at the Bay. We've had a good competitive fleet every year. The Hobie Wave may not be a highest tech boat, but it does offer good one-design racing in a day and age where it is difficult to find a one-design fleet of catamarans anywhere.

I had the opportunity to race a Hobie Wave at the US Sailing Meeting last year in California....Just a fun race, they said...with a group of sailors who are at the top of their sport, including several Olympic Champions. You should have seen the Hullabaloo at the favored end of the line. You would have thought it was the World Championships. I steered clear of that mess, and I was actually the first boat to round the mark and finished a very respectable third in that race . That little boat surprised me by how well it moved through the water. The Mighty Hobie Wave! The Great Equalizer!

So catch a Wave and bring it to the Bay! A great promoter of the Hobie Wave and the man who wrote the book (several books actually) on Catamaran Racing, Rick White, will be racing with us on a Wave. So rub shoulders with one of the sailing greats of all time.

Interlake, Thistle, and Hobie 18 Reunion!
This is also a reunion for all 18 foot boats! Let's get those old boats out of the box and start sailing!

Hobie 18 Reunion at Bay Week: We had a nice fleet of TheMightyHobie18's last year.....we're looking for even better class this year. And how about those other 18 foot Cats? We'll let you play too!!!

Dennis and Shara Taylor are bringing their gung-ho group of sailors back from Lake Carlyle Sailing Association. Dick and Betty Bliss have put their old TheMightyHobie18, Mushmonk back together. Who else will be coming?

Interlakes and Thistles: Ron and Kay Soka and Ray Gall are talking this event up, so don't miss it!

Beachcats and Centerboards: The Sandusky Steeplechase Race, Saturday, August 2, 2003
The Sandusky Steeplechase Race, to be held on Saturday morning, August 2, 2002, is the is a 16 mile wet and wild feeder race which the beachcat sailors and some of the more hardy centerboard sailors use to get their boats from Sandusky, Ohio to South Bass Island (Put-In-Bay) in preparation for the Bay Week Regatta on Monday morning. Participants have the option of sailing in the Sandusky Steeplechase Race as a separate event from the Regatta. Trophies will be awarded three deep for any class of five or more boats. Entry fee is $25. Check out I-LYA Web site for more information: www.I-LYA.COM Download your 2003 I-LYA Regatta registration form here: http://www.i-lya.com/Sail/2003_Sail_Reg.pdf

In the past all the Steeplechase Awards were handed out in conjunction with the Deepwater Awards at the free Beer Rum Party on Monday Night. However, many of the beachcat sailors did not stay for the Regatta, so they missed out. Many the racers turned around at the finish line and headed back to Sandusky. Now we are giving you a reason to stay and savor the flavor of the islands!

1st Camping at Put-in-Bay Yacht Club: Tent or Van camping for Saturday Night
and throughout the week. Call Bob Everson at 513-755-0869 or
E-Mail: bob@sailocra.com PIBYC is within easy walking distance of town. If
you are camping at the State Park or Fox's Den, there are taxies available to
get you where you need to go.

2nd Steeplechase Awards and Pool Party at St. Hazards: We will rendezvous
Saturday afternoon at St. Hazards Resort on Middle Bass Island, where we
be passing out the Steeplechase Flags. Commodore Dan van Heeckeran will
do the honors. St. Hazards is a resort with the flavor of the Caribbean with it's
tiki style Bars, restaurant, microbrewery, swimming pool and spa, for use by any
of it's patrons, so bring your bathing suit. You won't believe you are still in Ohio!!!
You'll need to take Sonny's Ferry. Look for discount coupons in your race packet!
Time of awards have tentatively been set for 4:00PM.

3rd Logistics Guide and Transportation: One problem with having a regatta
on the island is the logistics. Those of us who have done it year after year
don't give them a second thought, but for new folks, trying to figure it all out,
they can be daunting and discouraging. With the help of Jamie Diamond,
we will be developing a guide to help with the logistics. In addition, I will be
arranging for some transportation, for a fee, to get sailors from the Miller's
Ferry on Saturday AM, to SSC in time for the Steeplechase Race. That
means, if you are staying on the island Friday Night, you have a way to get
back to your boat at SSC. If you stay at SSC for the Party and Dinner, you
have a way to get your trailer and gear to PIB Saturday AM and we give you
a ride back. Cool!

Call Jim Johns at 419-499-4269 for more information on the Sandusky Steeplechase.

PS: This is a resort community. Check out some this link for Put-in-Bay at www.put-in-bay.com ....it has lots of information about what to do at Put-in-Bay and the various accommodations. As you have seen, the schedule for Bay Week will be a little more relaxed than your typical regatta, so there will be time to hook up with family or friends and do things together and there's plenty they can do on their own, as well.
