Does this boat use "shared lift" concept? [Re: MauganN20] #28705

Or could it be made even faster using this concept? I can't really see the daggarboards...

Look for the spray about midway up the hull. At first glace it looks like its coming from the leeward hull but you can just see the narrow black daggerboard.

Ah, Grasshopper. If you get the Skipperess, you can get the boat too!

Question,

Do those seven or so ants standing there add any weight at all to keep that hull down or could they just as well be standing on the other hull?? It seems to me that it would be similar to me putting about seven mice hiking out on my Hobie 18. What happens with these giants when they go over??

Game over.

Unless gary has developed a huge soloright, or Rick a huge righting pole, you're not going to be getting these big boys upright without a large powerboat.

What capsizing one of these monsters will be like. One thing for sure, it won't be pretty. Playstation almost found out what it was like to pitchpole during her first cross Atlantic test run. The problem is that it takes 15 to 30 minutes just to make the first reduction in sail area once the decision is made. The Book "The Race" went in pretty big detail about what almost happened and quoted some of the crew who were standing in the middle of the boat (working on reducing sail) when a 65knot gust hit them. As the rudders came out of the water and the bows went down, they realized that if this boat went over they would have to swim 30' just to reach an edge. They explained that they immediately unclipped the safety harnesses and started sprinting for the sides of the boat. Pretty wild. Playstation (Cheyenne) later had 5' added to the stern and something like 15 or 20' added to the bow length.

When one of these bad boys goes over, this is what you need to right it:

And they don't come cheap.

YES!
You bet it has. See the daggerboard right behind main beam.

Jake,
I recently read The Race--holy cow, it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. How about that surfing in the Southern Ocean! Monster swells, monster storms, and monster catamarans throttling at 40+ knots with ice bergs in sight. Heck, we're just playing in the bathtub with our rubber duckies by comparison.

MBOUNDS,

yeah but towing that righting sistem behind MAY somewhat slow it down on good wind days

Hey Tad,

How about the America's Cup winner -- a multihull version of Alinghi? This one is for sale. There is an ad in the classified section of the January/February Multihulls Magazine. No price, but they do have an e-mail address and telephone number.

Great book wasn't it? I had to put my copy down in lieu of some technical stuff for now but I can't wait to finish it.
