This is a 110-mile, two day race around Key Largo and Islamorada, with beautiful waters, and usually great winds. We will be sailing out of Gilberts Resort in Key Largo and the race is scheduled for Dec 11-12.

Is this a race that can be reasonably sailed without a spin?

I did it last year on a H20, no spin, and had a blast. You may not finish as early as others but there will still be boats behind you. Well worth the trip!

Funny, but the first race was won by a Hobie 18, no spin and that record held for about 7 years, despite all kinds of hot boats with spinnakers.
Depending on the wind direction and velocity, sometimes you cannot use the spinnaker that much.
Couple of things, however, is that this is for two-person boats only and PN of 72 or less. The discrimination is for safety and so the RC does not have to sit on the beach until 3AM. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Anybody Know where I could charter a I-20 of F-18 for the steeplechase?

We raced a H-20 last year but I've sold my boat and haven't decided on a replacement yet. Awesome race, I would hate to miss it.

Hey David,
Actually, Jake wasn't planning on going, but we might have changed his mind. I think we have made a good team so far, but that's just my opinion. I talked to DS today and he might try to get with J Super about possibly crewing for him. Unless we can get him ride I wouldn't want to back out on him, we might have been slow last year(no spin) but we ha a heck of a time. Are you and Mike going? If so what are you racing, could turn out a few F-18's, might be fun!

Man, you guys make it hard to earn a living! let's see....if I manage to somehow do Steeplechase this year will make...umm........17 events raced this year including 2 major events (Tybee 500 and PRW) and 3 trips to the Keys. That's not to mention the two other events I had intended to attend were cancelled!. Not a bad year - definitely a personal record. It's a good thing for me that Bonnie is so understanding.

No wonder my yard looks like a$$.

Yard work is WAAAY overrated. I find that if I periodically move the hobie around, and drive thru the yard once a week, the grass doesn't need mowing as much

After talking to David and Chris tonight, I've been pretty well talked into doing it on my new tiger. Not that it took a whole lot of convincing. I just have to check my vacation balance at work first.
2 days to tigerdom
I'll probably come to midlands also.

Check out this bizzare N6.0 I just found randomly

I guess that means I'm in! Congrats on the new boat John!

I'm convinced that the 6.0 in that ad was put together by someone who has never pitchpoled before. That center bench would wreak havoc on the skipper when that front beam and trampoline dive below a wave and the boat comes to a quick stop!

There was some - somehow I managed to restore a monohull too (although that doesn't have anything to do with my day job either! )http://www.teamseacats.com/hunter/

Back to the thread topic (sorry for hijacking thread) ... Dave, are you and Mike bringing an F18 to steeplechase? Looks like potential for a decent F18 turnout within the usual I20 showing. If we have a hard upwind beat it would be interesting to see how the F18s fair with the N20s.

I'm preregistered on an I20. Check out who else is registered and get yourself registered. It doesn't cost a thing to preregister but it gives Rick and Mary an idea of how many to expect.

Johnny!

Sweet, another F18 in the area, what a phenomenal growth of this fleet. How many is that now 18?
They are putting the docks back in at CSC today, so the mooring field in front of our beach should be gone by the weekend. Bring that new Tiger on to the Midlands, looks like we may have a little fleet.
