Hey,

I posted this on another web site and was told to post here as well. I'm trying to get into the world of cats.

Sailing in Lake Ontario and looking for some views on these two cats or other recommendations. I have read differing opinions, so I came here for even more!! Price is a consideration, but also speed potential/results and technical skill. What should I be focusing my search to?

Craig

Hi Craig,
Where on Lake Ontario are you? You are welcome to come over and try out my 6.0na. This weekend I am in Toronto (Etobicoke), and after that I keep the boat near Kingston (Picton)..

I really like the 6.0. It is quite a straight line machine, and is a very nice sailing boat. However, the N20 is much improved over the 6.0 in terms of ease of sailing with the larger tramp and self tacking jib. You can pick up 6.0s for a good price these days. The racing fleets are all moving from the N6.0, H20s etc to the Nacra 20s or f18s, so if you are at all into racing then definitely get the N20. I would recommend the N20 if the cost isn't an issue.

For a first cat if you are going to just sail around and not racing I would suggest an H16 for ruggedness and simplicity. If you want a bigger boat I would then say look at the TheMightyHobie18. It's bigger and it's tough (but avoid '83-'88). It's slightly more complicated to sail but definitly doable. Both can be found for around $1000 to $2000 for a decent boat and trailer. Spare parts are abundant and lots of people know about them. These are great cats that can take a beating and if you decide to upgrade or that cats are not for you, you can sell them for the same as you bought them.

If you are worried about sailing either on big water, I have sailed both off the coast of northern MA.

I feel these are great starter cats.

Between the 6.0 and I20, the I20 wins hands down IMHO.

Its cleaner. All it took was one season of my butt crewing on the 6.0 "cheese graters" on the tramp to not like that boat.

The 6.0 is boomless. I don't like it. I likey a boom.

The I20 has a carbon stick, which makes hefting that thing up there much easier than the 6.0 aluminum monstrosity, plus makes righting after a capsize a bit less of a chore. Trey can solo right the I20.

The I20 is a bit more of a wet ride than the 6.0 because of the freeboard. Because of all that floatation up front, you have to be careful pushing through surf, make sure you've got weight up front.

I prefer the rudder system on the I20 to that of the N6.0 as well.

I am in Toronto, but will be out of town this weekend...sadly. Are you doing the regatta at EYC this weekend?

What would the price difference between the two cats be (and a F18 as well)? I will not be campaigning the cat extensively, but would do local (lake ontario) regatta's, and maybe more national racing when able to. So the international 1 design push isn't as big of a factor right now. I'm looking for a modern design that I can take out with friends on weeknights and race with my brother (he and I have good sailing skill) on weekend regattas. I'm around 195 and he is just over the 200lb...does this factor in to my choices? What kind of racing could I look forward to in my region?

Hi Craig,
Yes I am doing the regatta at EYC this weekend, and I will have the boat at EYC next week as well if you are available after work we could go out.
There is a very active fleet that we have in Ontario and there are many events between Burlington and Belleville. See http://www.cat-alist.com/notices/2005/2005_orca_schedule.pdf for the full Ontario Schedule. Great group of people and lots of fun.

As for weight, it is a very important factor in deciding a boat. The 6.0 is just about the most weight friendly boat that you can sail. 400lbs of crew isn't a problem at all. The N20 is also very weight friendly. I think this is due to having lots of sail area, and lots of hull volume.

The f18 is very sensitive to weight which is a problem for me, and will be for you as well. See my post on f18 crew weight.

at near 400 lbs, you'll walk the dog on spin reaching on an I20.

As Mr. Wick Smith said about sailing an I20 heavy, "it was like a '74 cadillac with bad shocks, but damn did it fly"

You can find pretty good deals on used I20's. Around $10k for a decent used one. Check the classifieds section on this site.

Dave, is your's on the market? What are the 6.0's going for? If you're not selling, it would be good to know that there are others locally to race right off the bat

Hi Craig,
Yes mine is for sale. The prices that I have seen are all over the place, and I think that it really depends on the condition and how old it is.

If your in Canada why not consider the Mystere6.0,there must be reasonable prices and the boat will certainly hold crews exceeding 400lbs. capt. Teneal MXC "Lets get it on".
