Useful post Stephen, thanks. Even though I don't have a Taipan or even a Superwing mast on the Stealth, it does help to know what the 'opposition' are doing to tune their boats.

Also, of course, as we all know a lot of the methodology is applicable to all platforms.

I read the AHPC tuning guide for the Taipan 4.9 and I just wanted to say that I find that I'm really moving away from :

Quote

Measure the height of the trap ring off the centerline
of the deck at the front chain plate and then take the trap towards the stern. With normal mast rake the trap ring is
the same height off the deck about 100mm behind the rear beam.

I'm now actually 200 mm IN FRONT of my rear beam. The furtherst back I ever was was ON the rear beam and that had alot of rudder pressure with rooster tales flying up and having issues bearing away quickly in gusts in sloop rig mode.

I'm finding that I stand up my mast much more vertical on my boat now and I don't seem to have any issues on the downwind leg as I always deploy my spinnaker sail on these legs. And I trully mean always.

So I'm 300 mm in front of where AHPC advises us to be. I think that our larger squaretop heads are partly the cause of this as well as the fact that we don't not need as much margin downwind anymore because of flying the kite which seems to stabilize the boat alot. If this is not it then my mainsail just seems to have more power to the rear than the Taipan boats. Of course I have a slightly smaller selftacking jib and I don't know what effect this has on the overall situation.

I do better in races now with the more vertical mast and I do race often in strong winds.
