I had the good fortune to be there on Tues and Wed. These boats are incredible. Close quarter racing at amazing speeds in light to medium air provided lead changes and extremely close crossings. At times they were tacking and gybing with 10 feet of the spectators, and never more than 200 yards away. You could do the entire Tybee in less than 24 hours with one of these cats...

How do they launch the boats at the venues? With a hoist? And then keep them in the water during the event, I presume?

Wish I could have been in Baltimore to see them. We saw the Formula 40's race in Miami, very up close. It was incredibly awesome -- well, there really are no proper adjectives to describe it.

Do they ever fly spinnakers or just those genakers? They looked pretty tight luffed, like they could be used upwind.

They carry the apparent wind so far forward, that spins would be useless. Even the flat assym. kites we have today are not flat enough for these bad boys.

Guys/Gals:

Check Volvo sailing out this weekend. Got this from Schuttlebutt:

BIG WEEKEND FOR TV
For those of you who crave more sailing on TV, OLN has come to the rescue. At 4:30 pm EDT this coming Sunday, OLN will air a show produced and narrated by Gary Jobson about the 286-boat Acura Key West 2006. But the televised sailing action actually starts a half hour earlier. At 4:00 pm EDT OLN will show a 30-minute program on the Volvo Ocean Race.
And that’s just the first show in a series of four programs on the Volvo Ocean Race -- all of which will be aired on successive Sunday afternoons. (Program 2 - 5/14, 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm; Program 3 - 5/21, 4:30
pm - 5:00 pm; Program 4, 5/28, 4:30 - 5:00). --

Thanks Doug! I'm always amazed we don't see more TV coverage here in the USA. When I travel to England, Ireland, Brazil, Germany, and Italy, they air a show produced by CNN International called "Mainsail" which covers the major regattas world wide, every Sunday night. Why can't CNN USA play it? I would much rather watch that than say...Bill O'Rieley reruns or Desparate Housewives...

Timbo:

OLN has a lot of sailing. Swedish Match races and even had the Tybee once. If you have a DVR check there guide for future shows or maybe you can go to the OLN website.
