I was thinking about sailing over from CT, doing this race and sailing back.

Leave from Old Saybrook/Old Lyme area, Orient Point is only 10 miles from Old Lyme. Public Launch in Old Lyme at the end of the CT River gets you out in the Sound.

Or the RI/MA guys could leave from Barn Hill launch in RI and sail over, its about the same distance.

Its a piece of cake on a i20, F18, N6.0 with a medium breeze.

Leave early and go over and back as a group?

Anybody interested?

Bill

You have peaked my interest.... how long is the race? It would definately be dependent on weather. Is there a website for this event showing more details?
Anyone else up for it???
Thanks!

The distance is about 25 natuical miles. There is no website but I could give you all the details. You guys would appreciate the challenge presented by the currents, wind shifts and wind shadows. There is a lot of tacking and jibing for a distance race. It's not a drag race like the statue of liberty was this year. On sunday we're planning on doing another distance race leaving from southold bay going west up into great peconic bay towards riverhead and back. This distance is approximately 27 nautical miles. These 2 days of sailing will give you a good tour of the bays out here between the forks. I'm working on getting mast up overnight storage so the guys from out of town can get in 2 days of racing for one set-up and knock-down.I hope you can make it. Greg

Here's the sailing club website. It doesn't give much info related to the race. http://www.southoldyachtclub.com/11628.html

We've received permission from the yacht club to leave boats on the beach overnight for sunday's race. If anyone would like info for places to sleep or camp overnight please let me know. You can get in two days of racing and a decent sailing "tour" of the east end of Long Island. You won't be sorry.

Who's in from CT/MA/RI/etc? Lets get a roll call going.

We could leave early Sat am, Old Lyme has a free public launch site that gets you out on LI Sound. Orient Point is 7 nautical miles from the launch site and then we need to sail into Shelter Island, looks like 4nm. This would be easy with some breeze. Leave CT by 8:30 to be safe.

We can also leave the boats rigged on Friday night on a private beach around the corner from the launch.

If we dont have enough wind to make the Sat am start, we sail over, join in, go around Shelter Island and sail back.

Who's in?

Bill

Smith Neck Road, go to the end. The launch is called "Great Island"

I just looked at a map, Barn Hill Launch in Watch Hill area is quite a ways to east.

Old Lyme is better, lets do it from Old Lyme, leave and sail over as a group.

I am planning on doing it on my 6.0. I need someone with cat trax for an 8'6" wide boat to go though! Mine are dead.
I talked to a few of the I-20 guys from the New England area and while there was interest everyone seemed up in the air. I'll talk to a few more people and send an email out to the northeast hobie sailing email list as well with the N.O.R.
I know a 16 from my club is planning on racing as well.
Bill... I know where you are talking about launching out of. There are tons of motor boats around there at the CT River entrance. Maybe someone has a friend that would want to tag along as a support boat incase the wind died or something.

I'm glad you guys are going to make the effort to join us. At 9:30 am on saturday the 19th you'll have a 4.5 knot current propelling you thru plum gut. However, the distance from there to the southold bay starting line is about 12 nautical miles with some foul currents awaiting you in greenport harbor. You might want to leave extra time or see if you can sail over on friday. If you can do that I could look into B&B's or campsites to stay at. I could also provide transportation for 6 people at a time (my minivan) to and from dinner and the race site. Let me know ASAP if this sounds good to any of you. I understand if you can't convince your employer that sailing is much more important than work.If you at least come over and see how nice the sail around shelter island is-I think you'll definately make next year's race (#20) Greg- gildergove@optonline.net

Greg,
What source are you referencing on the tides? Is it online?

I'm still planning on starting from CT in the morning.

Thanks

Bill

Todd,
I dont know anyone with a powerboat that could follow us.

Plan on being totally self sufficient and bring safety gear as if it was a distance race. Tell someone (parents, wife, friend, etc) what you are doing and when you will check back in.

I was thinking that it would be i20's, n6.0 and F18's that would make the trip over. These three type boats can stay within eyesite of each other under a range of wind speeds and conditions. When you add in non-spin or other older models of boats, you risk getting spread out. I dont recommend doing it in a H16. The differences in speed will make it hard to stay together as a group.

I dont recommend the H16 come along, tell them to drive around or take the ferry.

Bill

Bill, high tide in plum gut for 8/19 is 7:30am. The Eldridge tide and pilot book shows a 4.5 knot SE current thru plum gut 2 hours after the ebb starts. You'll have a favorable 2.6 knot NW current on the way home starting at approximately 1:30pm. It reaches a maximum of 4.2 knots. Greg

Guys, I have done the trip that you are talking about many times on my larger boat, (30ft Pearson). If you leave from Old Saybrook, or anywhere west of that you should be fine in reguards to the race (Fishers island to Plum island) Which can be hairy enough in a larger boat. Plum gut on the otherhand is about 300 yards of pure hell in a 16ft boat if you go though during max ebb or flow. It can be quite nice at exactly the tide change though. I would reccommend getting there 30mins prior to high tide. Either way, stay about 100 ft to the east of the light house and that will be the shortest and easiest route through.
I'd go myself if I had a hooter or a spin on my 5.0 but I think I'd be left in your dust (or spray!)

Have fun!

-Jeff
