anyone got any product numbers, pictures, or suggestions on running a 10:1 mainsheet system?

David,

The infusion has a 10:1 setup with a 5-block on top, a triple on bottom, with a double hung off the becket on the triple. I put the bitter end on an eyestrap on the top of the cleat, and the angle works really well. The 10:1 setup works really well for working the main upwind.

I've never seen that block system on a tiger, seems like it would be pretty sweet. The tiger I sail on was new in May of '05, when did they put this system on?

What are people's thoughts..... I believe 10:1 to be overkill. We use 8:1 on the Capricorn and used likewise on the Tornado which had slightly higher loads. Both boats 8:1 seemed sufficient.

Would 10:1 loose a lot of feel and reduce reaction time. Also give you far too much extra mainsheet on deck. The system also would be a lot heavier too.

I am sixteen feet and 7/1 and that is easy. The extra sheet on the deck would drive me nuts for the little gain of easing work load. I have a cleat and that is for when I know the conditions will tire me a little. It is used carefully and not to be lazy. Gloves seem like over kill to me and I have a shock cord with a short of sheet set up on my deck so I can hang off it and develop grip and callouses. The shock cord is good for playing with sheet set ups in general.

Gloves may not be neccessary for a main sheet, however when it comes to spinnaker halyard / retrieval lines.... No gloves = no skin on fingers.

I agree with T_A that 10:1 is a bit OTT.

Instead of spending all the cash on blocks, I would spend more time in the Gym.

10:1 would be a pain int he butt. There is enough rope on the F18 anyway. Having said that, I can understand the attraction if it allows attractive crews (as seen on the Hobie 16) rather than the blokes currently required on the bow of an F18. This would also have the added bonus of letting me get off my [censored] diet.

what can I say, I either sail with women or pusses, 10:1 worked well on the new 20's at the Midwinters(new Alter Cup boats), and I did bitch about at first, but was glad for it later.
BTW... Great pix and helpful advice, thanks to all. Mike, you going to Lake Norman this weekend to ride out the hurricane?

Can't make Norman for labor day, we'll be unpacking and setting up the new warehouse. See you at Catfest.

-Mike

ps - call me a wuss. I like the new 10:1, I can micro adjust the mainsheet trim with one arm and never cleat it off like an A-cat...

I crew on a Tornado with a conventional 9:1 + Swiftcord, untapered. It seems soft to me, as I could pull harder and sometimes have to move a lot of line. The skipper might feel different, as he only gets to use one hand to pull.

I helm on classic Tornado + spin with 7:1. This seems too hard upwind, but I only get to use one hand, as I rarely have expert crew to hand off to. It's very nice downwind though, as I like to play an arm's length of sheet to smooth out the puffs and lulls as I fly downwind.

For the record, the conventional rear-sheeting "8:1" cascade systems is really 9:1. (The cascade is 8:1, but leading the sheet from boom tip to traveller gives extra purchase.)
