Does anyone else think these two proposals for Tornado class rule changes are contradictory?

[Linked Image]

#5 proposes a slot fairing that typically runs from the front of the opening to about 1/3 back along the board...then mylar strips are used for the rest of the opening. This would mean those strips would be less than the 880mm required minimum from the #6 proposal....

Full ballot is here:

I believe they are contradictory, but I think it would mean that you vote for one and against the other. Between the two rules, you would either specifically outlaw the fairings or specifically permit them. Just an effort to tighten up the rules I guess.

so it would seem that both the faired centerboard trunk opening AND the full length (880mm) slot strips proposal's both passed. So how does one interpret this? Must a boat with a faired opening also run the full 880 mm strips? Do all boats have to fair their slots?

It seems clear to me that you can do the fairling, but you still must install the full length gaskets over the fairing.

Why bother to fair if you've still got to put slot strips over that section...whole point of the fairing effort is lost (ie cleaning up the flow at the front of the boards).

The reason you fair the front of the case is to seal it up when the poard is down, this means you are carrying a lot less water in the case when you are sailing. I will try to take som epics today of the front of my case, and the strips on my boat.

Macca,

Sorry mate but I gotta disagree with this...there is not a watertight seal at the slot opening...water is going to enter the case to the exact same level with ot without fairing the forward section.

Both the slot strips & fairing help to keep water pressure from forcing water up the slot while the boat is moving...is that what you mean?

I still maintain the fairing cleans up flow at the front section of the slot where boards sit. The strips do a reasonable job, but a well done fairing is much better. Whether fairings help improve boat speed to a noticable difference has yet to be proven (to me anyway <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />).

I still like to raise the boards in light conditions...this does seem give us an extra .5 to 1 knot through the water (GPS verified). This technique is no longer an option when you've faired...cause when boards are up you end up with a wide/slow opening at the front of the slot.

yeah, the pic is like my boat, of course the water will enter the case when the boat is stopped, but the water level is a lot lower when moving.
