Captain William Vane

Even though there's no legal rank on a pirate ship, everyone recognizes you're the one in charge. You tend to blend into the background occaisionally, but that's okay, because it's much easier to sneak up on people and disembowel them that way. Arr!

Kinda fitting actually :P

The pirates had a system where the captain actually only has complete control during engagements in battle. The rest of the time, the ships were run very democratically.

Have you ever been on a Stiletto? Don't make the mistake of tacking a hi performance cat in front of one. They have been known to mow down an unsuspecting cat, they don't tack as quickly... (Wasn't me though)

BUT... there was/is a 30' Stiletto called "Battle Cat" alas, not me.

Peace (for now )

Yes, one of the earliest democratic institutions. Pirates also had an insurance for those who were too injured to remain in service and they were given a pension.
Entirely more sensible place to sail than the navy.

Interestingly, the fraternal, collegial atmosphere of today's modern navies owes quite a bit to pirate influences. The Bounty mutiny also played a major role. The dominant British navy was mostly conscripted and much hated by the sailors.
