Ouch,

I haven't seen a job like that for a long time, must have been a good'n.

What type of boat hit you? How fast was it goin?

Anyway, thats a real shame mate, but the good news is you can build a new set of hulls and you've already got everything to put on it.

Regards

Thats a nasty scratch - I reckon it might leak a bit!

Damn shame it had to happen at all, but at the start of the season?

What a shame. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Are you covered by insurance for repairs ?

My Mozzie broke up at the Victorian state titles in 2004 and was written off by the insurance company. I had the boat builder rebuild the damaged hull with the money because the insurance company said that they didn't want the scrap timber and I was free to take it if I wanted.

The alternative is to buy a new set of glass/composite hulls. See the Mosquito web site for details and price.

Regards,

Peter

That is a very sad sight!
How about building a new hull, or even buying just one new hull?

The hull failed in the expected area tough, inside forward of the main beam. I see a stringer on the outboard side of the hull, but not the inside. Was there a stringer or double layer of ply there on the inboard side?

Didn't hit any boat, it was the shear power of the wind that did the damage. The forestay bridle ripped it to leeward and up a bit.

I'd been saying we would sail it till the hulls died and then see what would happen. They were always of dubious structural integrity. It just happened a bit earlier than I wanted it to, was hoping to get a full season out of them.

My first impression is that it actually failed on the outboard side first then zippered the rest of the hull off. Notice the very straight clean fracture down the outboard side.

Yeah outboard side had double layer of ply at top for structural shear strake, can't remember inboard side details. The other indicator of failure at the outside was a black, partially rotted deck to hull join stringer right at the failure.

I was keen to buy new hulls, but initial investigation on one of the mosquito websites suggests building may be more cost effective. And if I build, I may do a new design with more freeboard, and make it an F16. Obviously not to full spec, still getting used to sailing cats. Have to weigh up the options first.

Anyone want a brand new mosquito excluding hulls, I've replaced everything else within the last season?

mmm, what to do, what to do...

It looks like you are going to miss out on some sailing for a while. Very frustrating for you.

If you want to build new plywood hulls and make changes toward an F16 design you may as well invest in a set of Blade plans and build something that will keep you entertained for years.
Use your existing rig for now and upgrade the bits and pieces later. There will also be some others around to race against eventually.

The question is, how low was your bridle, and had you changed it at all? There are a few (mainly home built) Mosquitos that were built very light for cat rig only. Some even had twin forestays. I've seen one of these rig a spinnaker and survive, but I would feel nervous using a low bridle on a boat like that.

The annoying part was that my crew and I were just starting to get our boat handling together and be competitive on handicap. We'd somewhat sorted out the pointing issues we had by dropping the rig forward a bit and being able to use more mainsheet tension (without it blocking out) to reduce forestay sag. Weather helm was still fine.

I didn't change the bridle height from when I bought it. There was a guy at the regatta that had a look at the hull and said it was one of those cat rig only mosquitos with twin forestays.

The decision of what to build is kind of difficult because I happen to be an engineer in naval architecture and would like to try my own design, but I don't want to spend time (don't have much of it free) developing and redeveloping a competitive design.

I'm gonna take a step back for a week or so and research a couple of ideas re: design and build or buy.

Funny that the hull failed under tension and not compression, but if it was buildt for twin forestays and rot had started..

Building a new hull is faster than building a whole new boat, so you might get to sail some this season. Question is wether the other hull is also going to fail if it is underbuildt for the current configuration. I guess it will.
Too bad that this should happen at the start of the season!

Design your own platform, and build? Do you want to sail this season or build a boat? <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
How about finding another mozzie, if you have a fleet to compete with?

Nick,

Are you able to crew for someone else while you get your hulls sorted out ?

After a catastrophic failure like that you might find some kind soul in your club who takes pity on you and gives you a regular position or at least a stand-in on the emergency list. At least then you'll be able to get your weekly sailing fix. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

You might want to check out the spares for sale on ebay. There is a few sets of hulls which may suit and loads more for $200 and some of it sounds like its in good nick and hes in QLD. Use catamaran for you search word to find it.
Happy hunting... <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Yeah I do need to get my fix each week. I will enquire, but if I build, I will need alot of weekends to work on the new hulls.

Hi Ncik,

been there done that. You can buy "Altered" just the platform if you like. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

I would just pick up another cheap Mossie if I was you, I have seen some around very cheap over the years as all the rig is rubbish, but you have that fixed.

What ever you do don't let it stop you sailing something.

Regards Gary. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I've pretty much convinced myself to build a new set of hulls and have sent off the mould cut-files and material quantities to some CNC router companies and fibreglass suppliers.

This is in accordance with my earlier plans to sail the boat until the hull died and then build a set of F16 hulls to go under the rig and beams. Then at some stage a few years down the track, I can upgrade to full F16 beams and rig. The construction of the hulls has just become a necessity a bit earlier than expected (or desired).

I need to look at the brightside, it will be a practically new boat on completion of the hulls!

Unless there is a nasty shock with the composite materials, I will be building in foam and glass with timber stiffeners and some carbon or kevlar reinforcing.

Only thing I'm not looking forward to is the fairing.

I've been sub-ing in for crew on a 12' skiff a couple of times. It's been enough to get my fix. They're very physical boats and I'm not really big enough to handle it. Got plenty of bruises for my troubles.

Did I mention that we obliterated a jelly in a race prior to the boat breaking. We ploughed through a huge wave downwind and came out the other side with jelly-fish tentacles all over us and the tramp! My legs got stung a bit but I pissed myself laughing because my crew got stung everywhere! He even got stung up his shorts!!! He was trying to kick all the bits off the tramp even though he was wearing washing up gloves. hahahaha I can't stop laughing just thinking about it!!! I'm way too sadistic, I think I'm going to hell!
